What to look for in mood support supplements
Mood moves with sleep, daylight, workload and what you eat. No capsule changes those things, and none of the products here lifts a mood on its own. What some nutrients do is support the normal working of the nervous system and normal psychological function. Nutrients with approved claims come first
In Europe only a short list of ingredients may be linked to mental function at all. Vitamins B6, B12, folate, niacin, biotin and vitamin C contribute to normal psychological function. Magnesium, riboflavin and thiamine contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system. Vitamin B6, B12, folate, vitamin C and magnesium also contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, which is relevant here because flat energy and flat mood often show up together. Those are the wordings you will find on our labels, and we do not stretch them. Plant extracts are held to a different standard
Saffron, ashwagandha, rhodiola and L-theanine are the ingredients shoppers ask about most. None of them has an authorised European health claim for mood, so we describe them by what is on the label instead of by promises. Two things decide whether we stock one:
- Standardisation: the extract states the compound it is measured on, not simply "root powder".
- Dose per serving: the amount reflects what was actually studied, for example 600 mg of a standardised KSM-66 ashwagandha extract per capsule instead of a token 50 mg.
St John's Wort is a case apart in the UK. It is sold as a registered traditional herbal medicine for slightly low mood, and it speeds up the liver enzymes that break down many medicines. UK guidance is not to combine it with anticoagulants, antidepressants or hormonal contraception. If you use any prescription medicine, pick something else and check with your pharmacist first.

Give it time: two to three weeks of consistent daily use is a fair window before you judge anything, and a single missed week matters more than the brand you chose. Keep the expectation proportionate. These nutrients support normal psychological function, they do not treat low mood. In the UK the NHS advises 10 micrograms, that is 400 IU, of vitamin D a day from October to March, which is a useful baseline for most people through a British winter. If low mood lasts, talk to your GP rather than adding another supplement.

Plan for two to three weeks of daily use before you draw a conclusion, and longer for anything working through nutrient status. B vitamins and magnesium only make a difference if your intake was short in the first place, so someone with a real gap notices more than someone who already eats well. Herbal extracts in studies are usually taken for four to eight weeks. Take it at the same moment each day, keep the box visible, and give it one honest month before switching.
Water-soluble does not mean unlimited. The NHS gives clear ceilings for supplement use, and staying under them is simple once you add up every product you take, including a multivitamin.

High-dose B6 over long periods is the one to watch, since it can affect the nerves in the arms and legs.
For vitamins and minerals at normal amounts this is usually straightforward, but the answer depends on your medicine, so ask your pharmacist. St John's Wort is the clear exception. It speeds up the liver enzymes that break down many drugs, and UK guidance is not to combine it with antidepressants, anticoagulants or hormonal contraception, where it can reduce reliability. Other extracts with a calming reputation can add to the drowsiness of sedatives. Bring the actual box to your pharmacy conversation.
Vitamin D has approved claims for bones, muscles and the immune system, not for mood, so we will not sell it as a winter mood fix. What is certain is that between October and March UK sunlight is too weak for the skin to make enough, which is why the NHS advises a daily 10 microgram supplement, equal to 400 IU, for adults and children over one. If your winters feel heavy, treat vitamin D as a sensible baseline and daylight exposure as the bigger lever.
Both are popular, and they work in different ways. Saffron is used as a standardised extract in small daily amounts, has a long culinary history and a reasonable body of human research, though no authorised European claim; the price reflects that saffron is a costly raw material, so cheap saffron products deserve a close look at the label. 5-HTP acts on serotonin production and is the one that most often interacts with medicines, particularly antidepressants.
