How quercetin works and which form suits you
What quercetin is
Quercetin is a flavonoid: a natural plant pigment that gives onions, apples, capers and berries part of their colour. Your body does not make it and it is not an essential nutrient, so the UK has no official recommended intake for it. Most diets deliver a modest amount. The quercetin in supplements is usually extracted from the flower buds of Sophora japonica, the Japanese pagoda tree, because those buds are unusually rich in it. That is also why it sits with the other plant antioxidants in our range.
Absorption is where products really differ
Plain quercetin dihydrate is the form used in most studies and the cheapest to make. Its drawback is real: the body takes up only a small part of each dose. So two products showing the same milligrams on the front can behave quite differently.
Phytosome forms answer that problem. The quercetin is bound to lecithin, a fat from sunflower or soy, so it passes more easily through the gut wall. Liposomal liquids use the same principle, with the quercetin wrapped in a tiny fat layer. Both let a smaller dose do more work, and both cost more per gram. Which trade-off suits you depends on whether you want a high number on the label or more of it actually absorbed.
Combinations you will see on the label
Quercetin is rarely sold on its own. Two additions come up again and again, and each has a formulation reason behind it.
- Bromelain: an enzyme from pineapple stems, added because it is thought to improve how much quercetin the gut takes up.
- Vitamin C: unlike quercetin, it carries approved claims of its own, such as contributing to the normal function of the immune system. If that is your main goal, compare the label against our vitamin C range first.

Here is the honest part. The European food safety authority (EFSA) has not approved a health claim for quercetin, so we cannot tell you what it will do for you. What we can be precise about is form, dose and purity, and about use: people who take it use it daily for a few weeks, not once before an event. Quercetin may interact with blood-thinning medicines, and it is not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so speak to your GP or pharmacist if either applies to you.

Start with dihydrate. Move to phytosome if you want more from less.
Because quercetin is not an essential nutrient, no UK authority sets a recommended amount or an upper limit for it. Labels commonly land between 250 mg and 1000 mg per day for standard dihydrate, and much lower for phytosome forms, since less is needed for the same uptake. Always follow the dose on the pack you buy and do not stack two quercetin products on top of each other.
With a meal that contains some fat, such as eggs, olive oil, nuts or oily fish. Quercetin dissolves better in fat than in water, so a plain capsule taken on an empty stomach is the least efficient option. Timing across the day matters little. If your product splits the dose into two capsules, taking one with breakfast and one with your evening meal keeps levels steadier and is easier to remember.
Bromelain is an enzyme from pineapple stems, added mainly because formulators expect it to help absorption. Vitamin C is included because it has approved claims of its own and is inexpensive to add. Zinc appears in immune-focused blends for the same reason. These combinations can be practical, but check the amounts: some blends carry so little zinc that our zinc supplements would be the better route if zinc is your actual goal.
Quercetin has no approved health claim in the EU or UK, so we will not promise you a specific effect or a timeline. What we can say is how people use it: daily and consistently, usually judging over two to three weeks rather than a few days. If you are trying it around the pollen season, most users start before the season rather than in the middle of it, simply because a daily routine is easier to keep up.
Yes. Quercetin may add to the effect of blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin or clopidogrel, and it can affect how the liver breaks down certain drugs, including some corticosteroids. It is not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as there is too little safety data. People with reduced kidney function and anyone on cancer treatment should ask their specialist first. If you take any prescription medicine daily, check with your GP or pharmacist before starting.
You can raise your intake meaningfully, but not to supplement level. Red onions, capers, apples with the skin on, kale, blueberries and green tea are the richest everyday sources, and a typical UK diet delivers a few tens of milligrams a day. Studies use several hundred milligrams. Food quercetin does have one advantage: it is mostly bound to sugars, a form the gut absorbs relatively well. Food first, supplement if you want the higher dose.
