Nordic Naturals fish oil: forms, strengths and freshness
One brand, one clear focus: EPA and DHA
Nordic Naturals has made fish oil since 1995 and is one of the more narrowly focused names in our brand overview. Almost the whole range is built around two omega-3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA. The oils come from wild-caught sardines and anchovies, Arctic cod liver and wild Alaskan salmon, and production happens in Norway, close to the catch. That matters more than it sounds. Fish oil turns rancid with heat, air and time, and oil past its best tastes fishy and repeats on you.
Most products use the natural triglyceride form. In plain words: the fatty acids sit on the same glycerol backbone they have inside the fish. Many cheaper concentrates in the wider omega and fish oil range use ethyl esters, a cheaper processing route. Triglyceride oil is generally absorbed a little better and gives less aftertaste. Nordic Naturals publishes third-party test results per batch, so purity and freshness are something you can check rather than take on trust.
The range splits by strength and by who takes it:
- Ultimate Omega: concentrated softgels, more EPA and DHA per capsule.
- Omega-3 liquid: a teaspoon instead of capsules, useful if swallowing softgels is a problem.
- Children's DHA: lower, DHA-led doses in chewables and liquid.
- Algae Omega: made from microalgae, so no fish at all.
- Combinations: versions with vitamin D3, CoQ10 or curcumin.
When you compare products, look past the total fish oil figure on the front. What counts is the EPA and DHA per serving, and how many capsules make up that serving. Nordic Naturals states both clearly, which makes the price per gram of omega-3 easy to work out. Capsule size differs too: the Minis exist because standard fish oil softgels are large.
Why we stock Nordic Naturals
We are brand-neutral and look at three things: the form, the dose and whether a combination makes sense. Nordic Naturals holds up on all three. The triglyceride form is the one we prefer for fish oil, the label shows EPA and DHA instead of hiding them behind a total oil weight, and the batch results are public. We buy directly from the brand, so what arrives is authentic. Every product passes our compliance team before it goes live, we test ourselves, and independent labs spot-check batches. See how we select brands.
Who it suits and what to expect
This is not the cheapest fish oil on the shelf. You pay for the triglyceride form, the low-heat processing and the published testing. That is worth it if you take omega-3 daily and want to know exactly what is in the capsule. If you already eat oily fish a few times a week, a modest dose is usually enough, and our EPA and DHA products let you compare strengths side by side. EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart at 250 mg per day, and DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision at that same daily amount. Levels in the body build up slowly, so judge the effect over months of consistent use, not days.
Frequently asked questions
What is Nordic Naturals known for?
Nordic Naturals is a Norwegian-produced fish oil brand, active since 1995. Its focus is narrow: omega-3 fatty acids, mainly EPA and DHA, from wild-caught fish and from microalgae for the vegan line. The brand is known for using the natural triglyceride form, for low-heat molecular distillation that removes contaminants, and for publishing third-party test results per batch. Beyond fish oil it also sells combinations with vitamin D3, CoQ10 or curcumin.
Where do the fish come from?
Depending on the product: wild-caught sardines and anchovies, Arctic cod for the cod liver oils, and wild Alaskan salmon. The oil is processed and bottled in Norway, close to where the fish is landed. A shorter route from catch to bottle means less time for the oil to oxidise, which is the main reason fish oil starts to taste unpleasant. The vegan Algae Omega uses cultivated microalgae instead of fish.
Which Nordic Naturals product should I choose?
Start with how you prefer to take it, then match the strength to how much oily fish you already eat.
| Form | Suits | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate Omega softgels | Higher daily intake | Fewest capsules per serving |
| Omega-3 softgels | Everyday maintenance | Standard concentration |
| Liquid | Capsule avoiders | Measured by teaspoon |
| Chewables and gummies | Children, teens | Lower dose per piece |
| Algae Omega | Plant-based diets | No fish, DHA and EPA from algae |
How much EPA and DHA is recommended per day?
European reference values give a useful baseline. Adults have an adequate intake of 250 mg EPA plus DHA per day, which is roughly what one to two servings of most Nordic Naturals softgels provide.
| Group | Per day |
|---|---|
| Adults | 250 mg EPA + DHA |
| Pregnancy, breastfeeding | 250 mg plus 100-200 mg DHA |
| Children 2-18 years | 250 mg EPA + DHA |
| Infants 7-24 months | 100 mg DHA |

Is there a version without fish?
Yes. Algae Omega is made from microalgae, the same organisms fish get their omega-3 from, so it supplies both DHA and EPA without any fish. It is the option we point to for anyone eating plant-based or avoiding fish for allergy reasons, and you will find it alongside our other plant-based supplements. Note that softgel shells vary by product, so check the capsule material if strict vegan status matters to you.
Why does it cost more than supermarket fish oil?
Three things drive the price: the triglyceride form instead of ethyl esters, low-heat processing with a short residence time to protect the oil, and third-party testing published per batch. Cheaper oils often list a large total oil weight with a modest EPA and DHA content, so the gap narrows once you calculate cost per gram of actual omega-3. If budget is the deciding factor, compare that figure rather than the price on the box.
How do I avoid fishy burps and keep the oil fresh?
Take it with a meal that contains some fat, which slows the release and helps absorption. Keep bottles closed, cool and out of sunlight, and refrigerate liquids once opened. Use liquid within the period stated on the label, usually a few months. If an oil smells sharp or strongly fishy, it has oxidised and is past its useful life. Some people also find splitting the dose over two meals more comfortable than one large serving.
Can I take cod liver oil from Nordic Naturals during pregnancy?
Cod liver oil is a fish liver oil, and liver oils naturally contain vitamin A. The NHS advises against supplements containing vitamin A, including fish liver oils, during pregnancy, because high vitamin A intake can harm the developing baby. A fish body oil or the algae option avoids this, since they are made from the flesh of fish or from microalgae rather than liver. Maternal DHA intake contributes to the normal brain development of the foetus and breastfed infants. Check the label and ask your midwife or GP if you are unsure.
Can you take too much omega-3?
Very high intakes are the point to watch. EFSA concluded that supplemental intakes of up to 5 g of EPA and DHA combined per day do not raise safety concerns for adults, which is far above the 250 mg reference intake and above the serving of any standard Nordic Naturals product. Stacking several omega-3 products at once is where totals climb. If you take blood-thinning medication, discuss higher doses with your doctor first.
