How enzyme supplements work and which form fits your meal
Enzymes are proteins that cut food into parts small enough for your body to absorb. You make them yourself, in the pancreas, the stomach and the gut wall. Three do most of the work: amylase for starch, protease for protein, lipase for fat. Lactase is more specific. It splits lactose, the sugar in milk, into two simple sugars. Lactase production commonly falls after childhood, which is why trouble with dairy often starts in adult life.
Broad blends and single enzymes answer different questions
A broad blend holds amylase, protease and lipase together, sometimes with cellulase for plant fibre or bromelain from pineapple. People choose these around large or rich meals. A single enzyme targets one food instead. Lactase is the clearest example: it is the only enzyme here with a health claim approved in Europe, for improving lactose digestion in people who have difficulty digesting lactose. Blends do not carry that claim, and we will not suggest otherwise.
Some formulas add betaine HCl or ox bile. Products with betaine HCl are usually picked by people who already know that heavy meals sit uncomfortably with them. Ox bile comes from animals, so check the label if you eat plant-based.
Activity units tell you more than milligrams
Enzyme strength is not about weight. It is about activity: how much food the enzyme can break down under set conditions. Lactase is declared in FCC units, protease in HUT, lipase in FIP. Two capsules with the same milligrams can differ several times in activity. So compare the units. If a label gives only milligrams, you cannot compare it at all.
Source matters too. Most enzymes in food supplements come from fungi such as Aspergillus oryzae. These work across a wider pH range, so they stay active in the acidic stomach as well as further along. Animal-sourced pancreatic enzymes work in a narrower range and are less stable in stomach acid.
Form and storage matter more here than with most supplements
- Capsules avoid the pressure and heat of tablet pressing, which can damage the enzyme.
- Powders stir into food, useful for larger doses or if you dislike swallowing capsules.
- Chewables suit lactase, because you take them at the table.
Enzymes are sensitive to moisture. Keep the pot closed, cool and dry, and away from kitchen steam.

If your discomfort is vague and constant, an enzyme is not an answer on its own, so speak to your GP first. And when a meal is simply too large, portion size usually helps more than a capsule. People building a longer routine often combine enzymes with live bacteria cultures, which do something different: they are bacteria, not food-splitting proteins.

What is the difference between digestive enzymes and probiotics?
Enzymes are proteins that split food during the meal. They act within hours and then they are gone. Probiotics are live bacteria that pass through, or briefly settle in, your gut. They do not break down your meal in the same direct way. So the two are not alternatives to each other. Enzymes are a per-meal tool for specific foods, bacteria cultures are a routine you build over weeks. Many people use both, for different reasons, at different moments of the day.
When should I take digestive enzymes?
At the start of the meal, or with the first bites. Enzymes need to be mixed into the food to work on it, so taking them after the plate is empty leaves them little to do. For lactase, take it just before or with the dairy portion. If a meal is long, some people split the dose. Follow the label for the maximum per day, since most enzyme products are dosed per meal with a stated daily limit.
Which form should I choose?
It depends on whether you are covering a whole meal or one specific food. A blend spreads its activity thin across everything, so it rarely holds enough lactase to replace a dedicated lactase product.

How quickly will I notice something?
With lactase and a clear dairy trigger, the difference shows up with that same meal, because the enzyme either splits the lactose or it does not. With a broad blend it is less clear cut. There is no approved claim for blends, so we cannot promise a specific effect. What we can suggest is a fair test: use the same product at the same kind of meal for two to three weeks, then leave it out once. That comparison tells you more than any label.
Can I take enzyme supplements during pregnancy or alongside medication?
Many enzyme products sold in the UK state on the label that they are not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and not for children. That is the manufacturer's own instruction, so always read the pack rather than assuming. If you take prescribed medicines, or you have been prescribed pancreatic enzymes, speak to your GP or pharmacist before adding a food supplement. Prescribed enzymes are medicines with fixed dosing, and a food supplement is not a substitute for them.
How do I read enzyme strength on a label?
Each enzyme has its own activity unit, and only lactase has an official reference point in EU law. That makes milligrams close to useless for comparison, since activity per milligram varies widely between raw materials. FCC and ALU are the same unit for lactase.
