Post-workout is a moment, not a single ingredient. Everything on this page has one job: putting protein, carbohydrates or minerals back after you train. What you need depends on the session you just finished. Protein, carbohydrates and electrolytes each do one job
Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. That is why whey, casein and plant blends fill most of this category, and why protein powders and shakes are the usual starting point for strength training. Carbohydrates have their own approved role: they help normal muscle function recover after intense or long exercise that empties glycogen, the sugar your muscles store as fuel. Your total protein across the day is the bigger lever, and the UK reference intake of 0.75 g per kilogram of body weight is a minimum for adults, not a target for people training hard. Recovery products mainly make consistency easier: a shake in your bag is often the difference between eating properly and skipping a meal. Judge the effect over several weeks of steady training, not after one serving. If you already eat plenty of protein and train three times a week, a simple powder is likely enough, and that is a good place to stop.

Sooner is practical, but the pressure is overstated. Within an hour or two is fine for most training, and what you eat across the whole day counts more than the exact minute. The one case where speed helps is a second session within a few hours: then a drink with protein and carbohydrates gets fuel back in faster than a full meal. Otherwise, take it whenever it fits your routine.

Daily consistency matters more than timing. Creatine builds up in the muscle over weeks, so taking it after training is convenient rather than superior. Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise, at 3 g per day. Usually not, if your protein intake is already decent. Whey and most plant blends already contain the branched-chain amino acids, so a separate scoop mostly duplicates what you paid for. Free amino acids make more sense in specific cases: very low appetite, a restricted diet, or fasted training. If you do buy one, check the leucine amount per serving, because that is the part doing most of the work, and complete EAA blends give a fuller profile than BCAAs alone.

After a long ride, run or match, you have used stored glycogen and lost salts in sweat, so carbohydrates and electrolytes matter as much as protein. Carbohydrates contribute to the recovery of normal muscle function after intense or long exercise that depletes glycogen. Endurance athletes training daily often benefit from a combined drink; a once-a-week gym visitor rarely does.
