Supplements help mainly with convenience: after a late session, a shake is easier than cooking, and easier usually means more consistent. That is the honest case for buying one. How soon after training should I take it?
Sooner is practical, but the pressure is overstated. Within an hour or two is fine for most training, and what you eat across the whole day counts more than the exact minute. The one case where speed helps is a second session within a few hours: then a drink with protein and carbohydrates gets fuel back in faster than a full meal. Otherwise, take it whenever it fits your routine.
How much protein do I need per day?
UK reference values are set as a minimum to avoid shortfall, not as a training target. They give you a floor to work from.

Should I take creatine before or after training?
Daily consistency matters more than timing. Creatine builds up in the muscle over weeks, so taking it after training is convenient rather than superior. Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise, at 3 g per day. Are BCAAs or EAAs worth adding to a protein shake?
Usually not, if your protein intake is already decent. Whey and most plant blends already contain the branched-chain amino acids, so a separate scoop mostly duplicates what you paid for. Free amino acids make more sense in specific cases: very low appetite, a restricted diet, or fasted training. If you do buy one, check the leucine amount per serving, because that is the part doing most of the work, and complete EAA blends give a fuller profile than BCAAs alone.
Does post-workout nutrition differ for endurance and strength training?
Yes, and this is where most shopping mistakes happen. After lifting, protein is the priority and extra carbohydrates are optional. After a long ride, run or match, you have used stored glycogen and lost salts in sweat, so carbohydrates and electrolytes matter as much as protein. Carbohydrates contribute to the recovery of normal muscle function after intense or long exercise that depletes glycogen. Endurance athletes training daily often benefit from a combined drink; a once-a-week gym visitor rarely does.
