What sets Jarrow Formulas apart from other supplement brands
Jarrow Formulas is an American brand from Los Angeles that has made food supplements since 1977. It is known for probiotics with named strains, active B vitamins and ubiquinol. Compared with the other brands in our range, Jarrow sits in the middle of the market: studied, branded raw materials without a premium price tag.
The probiotics are the brand's strongest category
Jarrow lists its strains with their codes, not just "lactobacillus". Jarro-Dophilus EPS uses an enteric coating, a layer that stays closed in the stomach so the bacteria arrive further down in the gut. Fem-Dophilus contains the GR-1 and RC-14 strains, and Saccharomyces boulardii + MOS uses a yeast rather than a bacterium. If you want to compare strain counts and CFU numbers across brands, our collection of probiotic supplements puts them side by side.
Forms you can check on the label
This is where Jarrow is easy to judge. The B12 is methylcobalamin, the active form the body can use directly. Folate is often Quatrefolic methylfolate instead of folic acid. Vitamin K2 comes as MK-7 from natto, which stays in the blood longer than MK-4. MagMind uses magnesium L-threonate (Magtein). QH-absorb provides Kaneka Ubiquinol, the reduced form of coenzyme Q10, which is generally absorbed more easily than plain ubiquinone. Both types sit in our CoQ-10 range if you want to compare price per milligram. Note that vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. Coenzyme Q10 carries no approved health claim in Europe, so we do not attach one.
Why we stock Jarrow Formulas
We judge a brand on three things: the ingredient form, the dosage, and whether the combinations make sense. Jarrow scores well on the first two. Labels name the exact form, methylcobalamin instead of "B12", ubiquinol instead of "CoQ10", and probiotic strains appear with their codes. We are brand-neutral, so we carry the products we would give our own mother, not the entire catalogue. We buy directly from the brand, every product passes our compliance team, and independent labs spot-check batches. You can read how we select brands and products.
Who this brand suits, and where to be careful
Jarrow fits you if you read labels and want a specific form at a fair price. It fits less well if you want one simple daily multivitamin and nothing else.
- Strong choices: probiotics, active B vitamins, ubiquinol.
- Check per product: a good brand does not mean every item is the right dose for you.
- Not all vegan: some softgels use bovine gelatin, and Q-absorb contains soy lecithin.
- Give it time: for most nutrients, expect effects after two to three weeks of consistent daily use.
American product names such as Bone-Up or Neuro Optimizer say little about the contents. The ingredient panel does, and that is the part worth reading first.
Frequently asked questions
Who is Jarrow Formulas?
Jarrow Formulas is a food supplement brand founded in 1977 by Jarrow L. Rogovin and based in Los Angeles. It works with branded, studied raw materials and its own proprietary formulas, such as QH-absorb for ubiquinol and Jarro-Dophilus for probiotics. The range covers vitamins, minerals, probiotics, amino acids, enzymes and plant extracts. In practice, the brand is best known in Europe for its probiotics and its active-form B vitamins.
Are Jarrow Formulas products tested?
Yes, on two levels. Jarrow manufactures under Good Manufacturing Practice and states that products are tested for identity, purity and potency before release. On top of that, we buy directly from the brand, so there are no intermediaries between the factory and your order. Every product passes our compliance team before it goes live, we test products ourselves, and independent labs spot-check batches. Testing reduces risk; it does not make every product in a catalogue the right one for you.
Which Jarrow Formulas form should I choose?
Look at the form on the label rather than the product name. The active or better-absorbed form usually costs a little more, and for some nutrients that difference is worth paying for.
| Nutrient | Jarrow's form | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vitamin B12 | Methylcobalamin | Active form, usable directly |
| Folate | Methylfolate | No conversion step needed |
| Vitamin K2 | MK-7 from natto | Stays in blood longer than MK-4 |
| Coenzyme Q10 | Ubiquinol (QH-absorb) | Absorbed more easily than ubiquinone |
| Magnesium | Magnesium L-threonate | Used in cognition research |
If B12 is your reason for buying, compare strengths in our vitamin B12 collection first.
How do I take and store the probiotics?
Most people take a probiotic once a day, with or just before a meal, at the same moment each day. Several Jarrow probiotics, including the EPS line, are made to be shelf-stable, so a cool, dry cupboard is enough. Some other probiotic products keep their counts better in the fridge, and the label always states which applies. Heat and damp are the real enemies, so avoid a shelf above the cooker or a steamy bathroom.
Are Jarrow Formulas supplements vegan?
Some are, some are not, and the label decides. Many capsules use a plant-based veggie capsule. Several softgels, including QH-absorb ubiquinol, use bovine gelatin. Bone-Up contains calcium from a bovine source, and Q-absorb contains soy lecithin. So if you eat plant-based or avoid soy, check the "other ingredients" line rather than assuming the whole brand follows one rule. We list this information on each product page.
Why does the UK label say less than the American website?
Because the rules differ. In the UK and the EU, a supplement may only carry health claims that have been assessed and authorised, and each claim is tied to a specific nutrient and amount. Probiotics currently have no authorised health claim in Europe, so their labels stay factual: strains, counts and use. American product pages use freer wording. The contents of the tub are the same; the words on it are held to a stricter standard here.
How long before I notice anything?
For most nutrients, plan on two to three weeks of consistent daily use before you judge anything. Vitamin and mineral levels build up gradually, and a supplement only fills a gap in your diet. Probiotics often show digestive changes sooner, within one to two weeks, and some people notice a short adjustment period first. If you take something for a specific reason, keep the dose and the timing the same so you can actually tell what changed.
Is the 5000 IU vitamin D3 from Jarrow suitable for daily use in the UK?
It is a high strength. 5000 IU equals 125 micrograms, which is above the upper limit the NHS gives for adults. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, but more is not automatically better, because it is stored in the body. For daily year-round use, a strength closer to the reference amounts below is the usual choice; keep higher strengths for use on professional advice.
| Group | Daily amount | Upper limit |
|---|---|---|
| Adults and children over 11 | 10 mcg (400 IU) | 100 mcg (4,000 IU) |
| Children 1 to 10 | 10 mcg (400 IU) | 50 mcg (2,000 IU) |
| Babies under 12 months | 8.5 to 10 mcg (340 to 400 IU) | 25 mcg (1,000 IU) |
