What the Life Extension range actually offers
Life Extension is an American supplement brand, founded in 1980 by Bill Faloon and Saul Kent. It builds its formulas around published human research and lists more than 400 products across over 40 health categories. Among the brands we carry, it sits at the research-heavy end of the shelf.
The ingredient panel tells you what the brand is doing
You can read the brand's thinking straight from the label. In its CoQ10 softgels it uses ubiquinol, the form the body takes up more easily than standard ubiquinone. In Neuro-Mag it uses magnesium L-threonate (Magtein) rather than cheap magnesium oxide. Doses often sit at the higher end, which changes how you should compare prices.
- Count servings, not capsules: with a two-capsule daily serving, a 60-capsule bottle lasts one month, not two.
- Named forms: patented ingredients such as Magtein and PrimaVie shilajit are listed by name, so you can check what you are taking.
- Capsule material: most products are vegetarian, but some softgels use bovine gelatin. Check the panel if you avoid animal ingredients.
What these products can and cannot claim
Two things are worth saying plainly. CoQ10 has no approved European health claim, so we cannot promise you a result from it. People choose ubiquinol because it is the better absorbed form, and because it is the version most of the human research uses. Magnesium is different: it contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal psychological function, which are approved claims. Prices are higher than high-street vitamins. That is fair if you want these specific forms and doses, and less relevant if you simply want a basic daily tablet.
How we choose within this range
We never take a brand wholesale. We look at three things: the form, the dose, and whether a combination makes sense. From this range that means the well-absorbed options first, ubiquinol ahead of plain ubiquinone, magnesium L-threonate where the nervous system is the goal, and concentrated omega-3 softgels rather than low-strength fish oil. We buy directly from the brand, so every bottle is authentic. Our compliance team checks each label before it goes live, and we test batches ourselves alongside independent labs. You can read how we select brands and products.
Who this range suits
It suits you if you already read labels, take supplements consistently and want a particular form rather than the cheapest version of an ingredient. It suits you less if you prefer one small tablet a day and a low price per month. Give any new product from this range two to three weeks of daily use before you judge it, and take the oil-based softgels with a meal so the fat helps absorption. If you want to compare forms first, look at our Magnesium pages, and at the wider coenzyme Q10 selection from other brands before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of brand is Life Extension?
Life Extension is an American supplement brand founded in 1980 by Bill Faloon and Saul Kent. It develops its own formulas, based on published human research, and sells in Europe through its European arm. The range is broad: multivitamins, minerals, omega-3 softgels, antioxidants, amino acids, herbs and probiotics. What sets it apart in practice is the choice of forms and the dose level, which are usually higher than standard high-street vitamins.
Which product should I start with from this range?
Most people start with a foundation product and add one targeted item. A high-strength multivitamin with a two-capsule daily serving covers the basics, and a concentrated omega-3 fits alongside it. After that, pick one product for your main goal: magnesium for the nervous system, or ubiquinol CoQ10 if healthy ageing is your reason for buying, which is also the theme of our longevity collection. Two or three products used consistently beat six used now and then.
Are Life Extension supplements tested?
Yes. The brand produces in NSF-registered, GMP-certified facilities, has batches checked by independent laboratories for purity and potency, and makes a certificate of analysis available for its products. On our side, every product passes our compliance team before it goes live, we buy directly from the brand without intermediaries, and we test products ourselves while independent labs spot-check batches. Two separate checks on the same bottle, which is how we prefer it.
Which CoQ10 form should I choose, ubiquinone or ubiquinol?
Ubiquinol is the form your body absorbs more easily, and it is the version used in most recent human studies. Ubiquinone is the classic form and costs less per milligram. Both are oil-based, so take them with a meal.
| Form | How it differs | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Ubiquinone with d-limonene | Classic form, lower price | First-time users on a budget |
| Ubiquinol softgels | Better absorbed form | Anyone wanting the studied form |
| Ubiquinol with shilajit | Combined with PrimaVie shilajit | Users already taking plain CoQ10 |
Note that CoQ10 carries no approved European health claim, so choose on form and absorption, not on promises.
How much magnesium a day is sensible?
UK guidance gives a reference intake for adults and a limit for what comes from supplements. Food counts towards the reference intake, so check what your diet already provides before adding a high-dose product.
| Group | Magnesium per day |
|---|---|
| Men 19 to 64 | 300 mg |
| Women 19 to 64 | 270 mg |
| From supplements | 400 mg or less |
Higher amounts from supplements can cause loose stools for a while.
Source: NHSHow long before I notice anything?
Plan on two to three weeks of daily use before you judge a product, and longer for anything working on nutrient levels in the blood. Buyers of ubiquinol CoQ10 commonly report that nothing much happens in week one. If your intake was already adequate, you may notice little at all, which is not a failure of the product: a supplement fills a gap rather than adding an effect on top of a full tank.
Are these products suitable for vegans, and who should take care?
Many products in the range are vegetarian and non-GMO, but some softgels use bovine gelatin, so check the capsule material on the panel rather than assuming. Most formulas are designed for adults over 18. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take prescription medicines, or have a kidney condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting, particularly with high-dose minerals and with vitamin K if you take anticoagulants.
Why do the European labels look different from the American ones?
Because European rules on wording are stricter. In the EU and UK, a supplement label may only carry health claims that have been assessed and approved, so magnesium can be linked to normal functioning of the nervous system, while ingredients such as CoQ10 and resveratrol carry no approved claim at all. Permitted maximum amounts of some nutrients also differ. The same brand therefore describes the same capsule more cautiously here, and occasionally at a different strength.
