What vitamin B6 does, and which form to look for
Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is one of the eight B vitamins. It dissolves in water, so your body keeps only a small reserve and needs a regular supply. It acts as a helper for well over a hundred enzyme steps, most of them in protein metabolism. EFSA, the European food safety authority, has approved a clear set of claims for vitamin B6. It contributes to normal protein and glycogen metabolism, normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal psychological function, normal red blood cell formation, normal homocysteine metabolism, normal function of the immune system and the regulation of hormonal activity. It also contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Anything beyond that list is speculation, so we leave it out.
Pyridoxine and P-5-P are not the same thing
Most supplements use pyridoxine hydrochloride. Your body converts it into pyridoxal-5-phosphate, or P-5-P: the active form that enzymes actually use. Some products deliver P-5-P directly and skip that conversion step. Does everyone need it? No. Official daily amounts are set on pyridoxine, and most people convert it without trouble. P-5-P suits you if you prefer the ready-to-use form, and it usually costs more per capsule. That extra price buys a form your body can use straight away, not a stronger effect.
With B6, a low dose is the point
This is one of the few vitamins where more is clearly not better. The NHS advises no more than 10 mg a day from supplements unless a doctor says otherwise, because very high intakes taken for months have been linked to numbness in the hands and feet. Single tablets of 50 mg or 100 mg are still widely sold. So add up your total across everything you take: if you already use a B-complex tablet, check its B6 line too.

Who a B6 supplement genuinely suits
In the UK, most people reach the recommended amount through food: poultry, fish, potatoes, bananas, nuts and fortified cereals all contribute. A supplement is worth considering if:
- you eat little protein or follow a restricted diet
- your intake is low over long periods, for example with heavy alcohol use
- a doctor or midwife has advised B6 for a specific reason
- you want a modest daily amount as part of a broader B intake
One honest note: low B6 rarely appears on its own. It usually shows up alongside low folate and vitamin B12, which is why a B-complex is often the more sensible starting point. And if tiredness is your reason for buying, give it two to three weeks of consistent use before you judge, and ask your GP for a blood test rather than guessing.

It depends on what you want from it. Pyridoxine hydrochloride is the standard and the form official intakes are based on. P-5-P is the active form, so your body skips one conversion step.

Both work. Choose on preference and price, not on strength.
With a meal is the practical choice. B6 is water-soluble and does not need fat to be absorbed, but taking it with food reduces the chance of mild nausea, which is the most common complaint people report. Morning suits most people because it fits an existing routine and routine is what makes a daily supplement work. If you take a B-complex, keep it to one fixed moment each day rather than splitting doses.
A single B6 product makes sense when you have a specific reason for it, for example on advice from a doctor. For general daily use, a complex is usually more logical, because low B6 rarely occurs in isolation and tends to accompany low folate and B12. Watch the total: a complex plus a single can quickly push you past 10 mg a day. Some products also combine B6 with magnesium products in one tablet, which simply saves you taking two.
Speak to your midwife or GP first. Vitamin B6 is sometimes prescribed in pregnancy for a specific reason, and that is a decision for a clinician, not a shelf. UK guidance is that folic acid is the B vitamin routinely recommended before and in early pregnancy. Also check your pregnancy multivitamin, since it very likely already contains B6, and avoid stacking a second product on top of it without advice.
Give it two to three weeks of consistent daily use. Supplements top up your intake gradually; they do not produce a same-day effect, and anything you feel in the first hours is not the vitamin. If your intake was already adequate, you may notice nothing at all, which is a normal outcome rather than a failure of the product. If tiredness is your reason for taking it, a blood test through your GP tells you far more than trial and error.
Because excess B6 is not simply flushed away without consequence. The NHS states that 200 mg or more a day can lead to peripheral neuropathy, a loss of feeling in the arms and legs, and that in a small number of long-term cases the effect can be lasting. The effect of doses between 10 mg and 200 mg is unclear. That is why the guidance is 10 mg a day from supplements unless a doctor advises more, and why a 100 mg tablet is not a bonus.
