Apple cider vinegar starts as apple juice. Yeast turns the sugars into alcohol, then bacteria turn that alcohol into acetic acid. Acetic acid gives vinegar its sharp taste, and table vinegar usually sits around 5 per cent acid. "With the mother" only means the vinegar was not filtered. The cloudy strands of cellulose and acetic acid bacteria stay in the bottle. Filtered vinegar looks clearer and holds the same amount of acid.
One thing is worth knowing before you buy. No health claim for apple cider vinegar itself has been authorised for use in Great Britain. That is why many gummies and capsules also contain a nutrient that does carry an approved claim, such as chromium, which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. So read the ingredient list, not the front of the pack.
We judge apple cider vinegar on three points: the form, the amount per serving, and whether the combination makes sense. We want a label that states how much vinegar or vinegar powder you get, not a vague "complex". Where a product adds chromium or a B vitamin, we check the dose is meaningful at that level, not decorative. We buy directly from the brands, so stock is authentic, and our compliance team checks every product before it goes live. We test products ourselves and independent labs spot-check batches. You can read how we select brands and products.
This suits you if you want a simple daily habit around meals, in the same way people use other kitchen-cupboard ingredients from our herbs and plants range. Apple cider vinegar is a food ingredient, not a strong intervention. Give it two to three weeks of consistent use and judge it as one small part of a diet with enough fibre, vegetables and protein. That is a fair expectation, and it is also why the habit is easy to keep.
Two practical points matter more than the brand you pick. First, acid and enamel: dilute liquid vinegar well, rinse your mouth with plain water afterwards, and wait before you brush. Capsules avoid tooth contact altogether. Second, comfort: a sensitive stomach or reflux often reacts to vinegar taken on its own, so take it with food or choose a capsule. If you use medication for blood sugar, water tablets, or heart medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.
Apple cider vinegar is vinegar made from apples. Yeast ferments the apple sugars into alcohol, then acetic acid bacteria turn that alcohol into acetic acid, the part that tastes sharp. People use it in dressings and marinades, and take it as a daily supplement in liquid, capsule or gummy form. No health claim for apple cider vinegar has been authorised in Great Britain, so treat it as a food ingredient you add to your routine rather than a remedy.
