How to choose a sugar free energy drink by caffeine dose
An energy drink is a caffeinated drink with extra ingredients added, usually taurine, B vitamins and sometimes amino acids. In the UK there is a legal marker for the strong ones. Any drink other than tea or coffee with more than 150 mg of caffeine per litre must carry the words High caffeine content next to the product name, plus the caffeine amount per 100 ml. That threshold, not the packaging, tells you what you are holding.
The caffeine per serving decides your experience
Cans run from roughly 80 mg in a 250 ml format to around 200 mg in a 500 ml can. A 60 ml shot can hold the same 200 mg in two mouthfuls. So two cans that look alike can differ by a factor of two. Before you add to basket, check three numbers on the label:
- Caffeine per can or per scoop, not per 100 ml, because can sizes differ.
- Sugar: zero sugar versions use sweeteners, the caffeine stays the same.
- Added vitamins: riboflavin contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
If you find you get jittery on 200 mg, drop to a 250 ml can rather than switching brands. The dose is usually the variable that matters, not the flavour.

When is the best moment to drink one?
Caffeine takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes to reach its peak, so drink it before the task, not during the slump. For training, one serving in the 30 minutes beforehand is the usual pattern. In the evening, be conservative: a single dose of about 100 mg close to bedtime can already make it take longer to fall asleep, and poor sleep tends to cost you more the next day than the can gave you. If you train late, a lower dose or a caffeine-free alternative is the sensible swap.
Are sugar free versions really a better choice?
For daily use, yes, in one specific way: you skip the sugar and the calories that come with a full-sugar can. What does not change is the caffeine, and that is the part most people underestimate. A zero sugar can with 200 mg of caffeine is still a 200 mg dose. Sweeteners used in these drinks are approved for use in the UK and EU, so the practical choice is taste. Can I drink one alongside coffee or a pre-workout?
You can, but add the numbers up first. A 200 mg can plus a scoop of pre-workout at 200 mg already puts you at the 400 mg daily reference for healthy adults, before your morning coffee. Stacking also tends to be where jitters, a racing heart rate and a rough comedown come from. The simple rule we give: one stimulant product per day, and pick the one that fits the task. On training days, choose either the can or the pre-workout, not both.
Are energy drinks suitable for children, pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No. High-caffeine drinks must carry the wording that they are not recommended for children or for pregnant or breastfeeding women, and UK soft drinks makers also follow a voluntary code not to market them to under-16s. In pregnancy, NHS advice is to stay under 200 mg of caffeine a day from all sources, and a single large can can use up most of that on its own. If you want the flavour and the ritual without the caffeine, an electrolyte or vitamin drink is the practical alternative.
Do the added ingredients like taurine, B vitamins and L-theanine actually contribute anything?
They do different jobs, and only some are backed by approved claims. Riboflavin contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, which is why B vitamins appear on almost every can. Taurine and glucuronolactone are present at levels that EFSA judged unlikely to interact adversely with caffeine, but they carry no approved health claim, so treat them as formula ingredients rather than reasons to buy. L-theanine supplements are the one addition people mention most often for taking the edge off a high dose. Expect a smoother feel, not a different dose.
