Bonusan Magnesium Citrate 125 Complex (120 capsules) contains magnesium citrate, supplemented with vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P-5-P). With just 2 capsules a day, you get 250 mg of magnesium and 1.5 mg of vitamin B6. Elemental magnesium is the amount of pure magnesium in a supplement. Magnesium citrate only partly consists of magnesium, the rest is citrate. So a capsule contains more than 125 mg magnesium citrate, but actually supplies 125 mg magnesium itself.
Magnesium citrate is a compound of magnesium and citric acid, the acid that naturally occurs in citrus fruits. It is one of the most commonly used forms of magnesium in supplements.
Magnesium occurs naturally in, among other things, leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grain products, pulses and dark chocolate. Green vegetables contain magnesium because it is at the centre of every chlorophyll molecule, the substance that makes leaves green.
Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P-5-P) is the active form of vitamin B6. Pyridoxine is the form that is often used in supplements and is first converted to P-5-P. This product contains vitamin B6 directly as P-5-P.
Vitamin B6 occurs naturally in, among other things, meat, fish, poultry, potatoes, bananas, pulses and whole grain products.
Many people take magnesium during or directly after a meal. With some food in the stomach, a supplement can be easier for some people to take, especially if they have a sensitive stomach. A regular meal also helps you to take it at the same time every day.
Yes. A high intake of magnesium from supplements can have a laxative effect, such as looser stools. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) therefore sets a safe upper limit for magnesium from supplements at 250 mg per day for adults. Magnesium from ordinary food does not count towards this. With 2 capsules per day, you get exactly 250 mg of magnesium. If you also take another magnesium supplement, you will exceed this limit.
