Choosing gelatine-free supplements without an animal shell
Gelatine is a protein made from the skin, bones and connective tissue of pigs or cattle. In a supplement it is almost never the active ingredient. It is the capsule shell, a coating, or the chewy base of a gummy. That is why a fish oil, a magnesium or a multivitamin can look plant-friendly on the front of the pack and still contain gelatine on the back.
Where gelatine sits in a supplement
Mostly in two places. Hard two-piece capsules for powders and soft capsules for oils both use gelatine as the industry standard, and in the mainstream supply chain most of that gelatine comes from pork. Gummies are the second place, because gelatine gives them their chew. The oil inside a fish oil capsule is not the issue; the shell around it usually is. The gelatine-free forms in this collection
- HPMC capsules, on labels also called hypromellose or vegetarian capsule. HPMC is made from cellulose, the fibre that gives plants their structure.

Two honest points. Gelatine-free versions often cost a little more, since plant shells are more expensive to produce, and you see that in the price of a large capsule count. Plant capsules also dissolve a few minutes slower in the stomach, which makes no practical difference for a daily vitamin. Labels remain the weak spot: "suitable for vegetarians" sometimes describes the shell alone, so we read the full ingredient list before a product joins our range by dietary preference.

If your reason is avoiding pork or beef specifically, gelatine-free is the right filter, checked against the rest of the list.
It depends on what you are taking and how you like to take it. The nutrient inside matters more than the shell, so start from the format you will actually use every day.

In practice, yes. An HPMC capsule dissolves a little slower than a gelatine one, usually a matter of minutes, which is irrelevant for a daily vitamin or mineral. What the capsule is made of does not change how much of the nutrient your body takes up; the chemical form of the nutrient does. Magnesium bisglycinate and magnesium oxide differ far more from each other than an HPMC shell differs from a gelatine shell.
Not automatically. Gelatine-free removes the most common concern, but other points remain: vitamin D3 from lanolin, glycerine of unclear origin, and alcohol in tinctures. Halal and kosher status also depends on the production chain and on certification, not on a single ingredient. If certification matters to you, look for the certification mark on the pack rather than for the words gelatine-free, and treat this collection as a first, useful filter.
Yes, in two ways. Some fish oils come in a plant softgel or a fish-gelatine shell rather than a porcine one, and liquid fish oil needs no shell at all. The second route is algae oil, which supplies EPA and DHA directly from the source the fish get it from. Algae oil costs more per gram of EPA and DHA, and it is the option that removes both the shell question and the fish itself.
Partly. Collagen is by definition an animal protein, and gelatine is simply collagen that has been broken down, so a genuinely gelatine-free collagen powder does not exist. Marine collagen from fish avoids pork and beef, which is what most people are looking for, though it is not vegan. Read the section after the active ingredients, usually headed "other ingredients" or "capsule shell". Gelatine appears as gelatine, gelatin, bovine gelatine or porcine gelatine. Plant shells appear as HPMC, hypromellose, cellulose or pullulan. Watch three grey areas: glycerine, which can be plant or animal; coatings on tablets; and the phrase "suitable for vegetarians", which sometimes refers only to the shell.
