Women's vitamins and minerals: forms, doses and life stages
The phrase "supplements for women" covers two different things. First, nutrients where the recommended intake for women is higher than for men. Second, formulas built around a life stage: the cycle, pregnancy, or the years after 50. Knowing which of the two you are buying makes the choice much simpler.
Iron is the clearest example. UK advice is 14.8 mg a day for women aged 19 to 49, and 8.7 mg from 50 onwards. Monthly blood loss explains the difference. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Above 20 mg a day from supplements, constipation and nausea become common, so we stock iron in gentler forms and modest doses rather than the biggest number on the label.
The form decides how a supplement feels day to day
Same nutrient, different experience:
- Iron bisglycinate: iron bound to an amino acid, usually easier on the stomach than ferrous sulfate.
- Folate as 5-MTHF: the active form of folate, next to standard folic acid.
- Magnesium citrate or bisglycinate: citrate can loosen stools at higher doses, bisglycinate rarely does.
- Vitamin D3 in oil drops: vitamin D dissolves in fat, so one drop with a meal is enough.
- Gummies: easy to take, but usually lower dosed and often with added sugar.
Life stage narrows the shortlist faster than gender does
Between 19 and 49, iron and folate do most of the work. In the UK, everyone is advised to consider 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D a day from October to March, because sunlight is too weak in those months for the skin to make enough. From 50, iron needs fall while bone maintenance becomes more relevant, which is where calcium and vitamin D come in. We look at three things: the form, the dose, and whether a combination makes sense. So we carry iron as bisglycinate as well as classic ferrous forms, vitamin D3 with a clear microgram amount on the front of the pack, and multivitamins where the iron content matches what a woman under 50 actually needs. We only use claims the European food safety authority (EFSA) has approved, and we say plainly when the evidence for an ingredient is thin. If tiredness is your main reason for shopping, a GP blood test tells you more than any product: with a ferritin result you can dose iron on purpose instead of guessing. Give any supplement two to three weeks of consistent use before you judge it, and longer for iron, because stores refill slowly. Reading the label as "which nutrient and how much" beats reading it as "for women".
A multivitamin is convenient when you want broad cover in one tablet and no strong reason to focus. Separate products win when you know what you are topping up, for example vitamin D in winter or iron with heavy periods, because you control the dose. One practical warning: many women's multivitamins already contain 14 to 18 mg of iron. Adding a separate iron tablet on top can quickly push you past a comfortable daily amount, so check both labels first.

If swallowing is difficult, drops or powder are the honest answer. If you need a full dose in one go, a tablet or capsule usually gets you there.

Most people cover this from food. Supplements make sense if your intake is low or your losses are high.
Take it with a source of vitamin C, such as a small glass of orange juice, since that improves absorption of iron from plant foods. Keep tea and coffee away from the same meal: their plant compounds bind iron and reduce uptake. Calcium competes with iron, so space a calcium supplement and an iron supplement a few hours apart. If a ferrous tablet upsets your stomach, a lower dose or bisglycinate is usually better tolerated than pushing through.
Longer than most packaging suggests. For nutrients you were genuinely short of, two to three weeks of consistent daily use is a fair first check. Iron is slower still, because your body has to refill stores before you feel a difference, so think in months rather than days. Products aimed at hair, skin and nails follow hair growth, which means several months. If nothing changes at all, the missing nutrient probably was not the issue.

Also skip cod liver oil, which is high in retinol. Check any multivitamin is labelled as suitable for pregnancy.
Two honest halves. Bone loss speeds up after the menopause, and calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones, while vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption of calcium. That is why vitamin D3 in drops and capsules stays on most shortlists, especially between October and March. For herbs marketed at hot flushes, such as sage, soy isoflavones or black cohosh, no approved health claim exists, so we describe them as traditional choices, not as symptom relief. Useful to try, sensible to keep expectations measured.
