How lozenges work and when they are the better choice
A lozenge is a tablet you let dissolve slowly in the mouth, usually in two to ten minutes. You do not swallow it with water. Part of the nutrient is taken up through the lining of the mouth, the rest goes down with your saliva. That makes a lozenge practical when swallowing capsules is a problem, and targeted when you want the nutrient to stay in contact with your mouth and throat for a while.
The mouth route matters more for some nutrients than for others. Zinc is the clearest example. A lozenge releases zinc gradually while it dissolves, so the dose per lozenge is small and taken a few times a day rather than all at once. Zinc acetate, gluconate and citrate all dissolve cleanly and differ mainly in taste. If you simply want one steady daily amount, zinc in capsules or tablets is usually the simpler route.
Vitamin B12 is the other nutrient people look for in this format. Holding it under the tongue is popular, and it does the job, but research comparing sublingual and swallowed B12 at similar doses shows little difference for most people. Sublingual means you keep it under the tongue so it dissolves against the mucous membrane. Taste and sweetener decide whether you keep going
A lozenge sits in your mouth for minutes, so flavour is not a detail. Most are sweetened with xylitol, sorbitol or dextrose. Xylitol tastes clean and is not fermented by mouth bacteria, which is why dentists are relaxed about it. Larger amounts of xylitol or sorbitol can loosen the stools, so check the label if you plan on several lozenges a day. Sugar-based versions often taste better, but they suit occasional use more than daily use.

If taste is the deal breaker, chewable tablets give you a larger dose in one go, and liquid drops let you adjust the amount drop by drop. A lozenge is not the right pick for children under five, because of the choking risk, and not for anyone who cannot keep it in the mouth long enough to dissolve. Used as intended, it is one of the easiest ways to keep a daily habit going.

Place it in your mouth and let it dissolve without chewing or swallowing it whole. Move it around now and then so it does not sit in one spot. Do not drink for a few minutes afterwards, so the nutrient is not washed straight down. Some mineral lozenges can feel unpleasant on an empty stomach, so take them after food if that happens. Follow the label for how many per day and space them out rather than taking them together.
Less than most labels suggest. The NHS reference amounts for adults aged 19 to 64 are modest, and there is a ceiling on what is sensible from supplements.

Not for young children. Anything that has to be held in the mouth carries a choking risk, so lozenges are generally kept for children of about five and older, and only where the label allows it. Read the age statement and the amount per lozenge, because a product built for adults can easily exceed a child's needs. For younger children, drops or a liquid are the safer route, since you can measure a smaller amount precisely.
The sweetener decides that. Xylitol and sorbitol are not fermented by the bacteria that cause tooth decay, which is why most quality lozenges use them. Versions with sugar, glucose syrup or dextrose spend several minutes in contact with your teeth, which is less ideal if you take a few a day. Acidic vitamin C lozenges are the other thing to watch: rinse your mouth with water afterwards and avoid brushing straight away.
Many zinc lozenges are labelled for repeated use, for example one every few hours over a short period. Two things matter. First, add up the total: the NHS advises no more than 25 mg of supplemental zinc a day unless a doctor says otherwise, because higher long-term intakes interfere with copper and iron. Second, keep it short term and go back to a normal daily amount afterwards. Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system, which is why it is used this way, but it is not a treatment for anything.
