Which amino acids are found in this collagen hydrolysate?
Typical amino acid profile: Glycine (1,050 mg), Proline (640.48 mg), Hydroxyproline (609.52 mg), Glutamic acid (515 mg), Alanine (445.24 mg), Arginine (365.48 mg), Aspartic acid (300 mg), Lysine (175 mg), Serine (154.76 mg), Leucine (134.52 mg), Valine (120.24 mg), Phenylalanine (104.76 mg), Threonine (95.24 mg), Isoleucine (75 mg), Hydroxylysine (75 mg), Histidine (54.76 mg), Tyrosine (50 mg), Methionine (45.24 mg)
Where does collagen naturally occur as a nutrient?
Collagen naturally occurs in foods such as bone broth, chicken skin, pork rind, fish with skin, and products containing gelatine.
What is the difference between collagen and protein powders such as whey protein?
Collagen is, like whey protein, a protein, but with a different amino acid profile. Collagen contains relatively large amounts of glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, while protein powders such as whey protein have a different ratio of amino acids. As a result, they are considered separate categories within food supplements.
Is collagen always of animal origin, or is there plant-based collagen as well?
Collagen is naturally exclusively an animal protein and does not occur in plants. Products labelled as "plant-based collagen" do not actually contain collagen, but other nutrients claimed to support the body's own collagen production.
What are amino acids?
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Collagen consists of a specific amino acid profile, including glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, which are relatively abundant in this type of protein.
What is hydroxyproline?
Hydroxyproline is an amino acid found predominantly in collagen and hardly in other proteins. It is therefore often mentioned as a characteristic component of collagen products.
