What is cod liver oil?
Cod liver oil is an oil extracted from the liver of cod. It has been used as a food supplement for generations and naturally contains omega-3 fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins.
Why does cod liver oil contain vitamin A and vitamin D?
The cod's liver naturally stores fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin A and vitamin D. As a result, these nutrients are naturally present in cod liver oil.
What are omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that occur naturally in fish, shellfish, algae, nuts, and seeds. The best-known forms are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are especially found in oily fish and fish oil.
Where is vitamin D found naturally in foods?
Vitamin D naturally occurs in oily fish, cod liver oil, egg yolks, and certain animal products. In addition, some foods can be fortified with vitamin D.
Can I use this oil during my pregnancy?
No, unless your doctor advises otherwise. This product contains 1200 micrograms of vitamin A per serving (teaspoon). During pregnancy, using supplements with a high dose of vitamin A is not recommended.
May I increase the dosage to 3 teaspoons a day?
No, this is not recommended. The original label states that the dose can be increased to 3 teaspoons per day, but 1 teaspoon already contains 1200 µg vitamin A; the maximum daily dosage for food supplements in the Netherlands. At 3 teaspoons, you would reach 3600 µg of vitamin A per day.
