How toothpaste tablets work and which type suits you
A toothpaste tablet is toothpaste without the water. Water fills a large part of a normal tube, so taking it out leaves a small solid tablet with the same working parts: a mild abrasive that lifts plaque, flavour, and an active mineral. You chew one tablet, it mixes with your saliva into a paste, then you brush with a slightly damp brush for two minutes and spit without rinsing. Keep any rinse for another time of day, so the fluoride stays on your teeth.
Fluoride or fluoride free is the real decision
Flavour is a preference, ppm is a choice. Fluoride is the ingredient with the strongest evidence behind protection against decay, and NHS advice for adults is a toothpaste with at least 1,350 ppm fluoride. A well made tablet states its ppm on the tin, and many sit at 1,450 ppm, the same strength as a standard tube. Fluoride free tablets are usually built around hydroxyapatite, a mineral that is a natural part of tooth enamel, or around clay and baking soda. They clean and freshen breath, and they suit people who have decided to avoid fluoride, but they do not carry the same evidence for decay. We say that plainly rather than leaving it out.
What actually changes when you switch
Three things feel different in the first week. Less foam, because most tablets leave out SLS, a foaming agent that can irritate mouths prone to ulcers. Foam is a sensation, not the cleaning itself. A grainy first few seconds while you chew, which most people stop noticing after a few days. Price per brush, which is usually higher than a supermarket tube. What you get back is one measured dose per brush, dry packaging, and a tin you refill instead of replace. Most formulas are also suitable on a vegan diet.

They fit less well if chewing is awkward for you, or if a young child brushes without help. Check that the pack states the ppm, not just the word fluoride.
Most tablets leave out SLS, the surfactant that makes conventional paste foam up. Foam feels like cleaning, but the plaque comes off through the abrasive and the brush, not the bubbles. So less foam does not mean less clean. For some people it is an advantage: SLS free formulas are often better tolerated by mouths that get ulcers easily. Expect the sensation to feel odd for a few days, then normal.
One tablet per brush, so two a day means around 60 tablets a month. Packs of 60 to 125 usually cover one to two months for one person. Per brush, tablets are generally dearer than a supermarket tube, and we would rather say so. What you pay for is the fixed dose, the plastic free packaging and refills. Buying refill pouches instead of new tins brings the price down noticeably.
Some tablets are made for children, but many adult tins say they are not suitable for young children. Two reasons: the chewing step needs a bit of coordination, and a tin of sweet tasting tablets can look like sweets, so store it out of reach. UK guidance is that children need supervision until about age seven and that the amount used matters more than the brand. Check the ppm on the pack and ask your dentist if you are unsure.
