How oral spray supplements work, and who they suit
A supplement spray puts a measured dose of liquid into your mouth. You aim at the inside of your cheek or under your tongue, hold it for a few seconds, then swallow. Part of the dose passes through the thin tissue in your mouth, which sits close to a dense network of blood vessels. The rest takes the normal route through your stomach.
A spray is a delivery format, not a stronger nutrient. The vitamin D3 in a spray is the same D3 you find in our vitamin D3 range. A University of Sheffield trial compared 3,000 IU a day as a capsule and as an oral spray over six weeks. Both raised vitamin D levels at the same pace. So the honest summary is simple: for many people a spray is an equally good route and an easier one, not a shortcut to more.
Which nutrients actually fit a spray bottle
Volume decides a lot here. One spray delivers roughly a quarter of a millilitre, so this format suits nutrients dosed in micrograms or small milligram amounts. That is why the category looks the way it does:
- Vitamin D3, usually 400 to 3,000 IU per daily dose, often paired with K2 as MK-7
- Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin, from around 250 mcg upwards
- Iron, zinc, iodine and vitamin C in modest daily amounts
- Multivitamins, where four sprays make up one full daily dose
You will not see a spray with 400 mg of magnesium or 10 g of collagen. Those amounts need powder or capsules, and no pump can carry them.

Who this format suits
Sprays earn their place if swallowing tablets is difficult, if you travel and rarely have water to hand, or if a jar of capsules keeps getting forgotten. Parents use them for children who refuse pills. People eating fully plant-based often use one to top up Vitamin B12, since that nutrient is needed in micrograms and fits the format well.
Two honest points. Cost per daily dose is usually higher than a plain tablet, because you also pay for the liquid, the pump and the flavouring. And taste counts more here: most sprays are sweetened with xylitol and flavoured with citrus, plum or blackcurrant, which not everyone enjoys. If that is you, liquid supplement drops offer similar convenience with less flavouring. One practical tip: press a new pump three or four times before your first dose. Skip that and you will spray air and assume the bottle is faulty.

For high-dose minerals, a spray is simply the wrong tool.
Shake the bottle first, since the nutrients are suspended in liquid. With a new bottle, prime the pump by pressing it three or four times until liquid comes out. Then spray against the inside of your cheek, not straight down your throat, and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing. If your product needs four sprays a day, you can take them together or spread them out. Consistency matters more than timing.
No. That is one of the practical reasons people switch to this format: no glass of water, no meal to plan around. Fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamin D3 and K2 are already carried in an oil or emulsifier inside the liquid, so they do not depend on a fatty meal the way some tablets do. No, and this trips people up regularly. Magnesium sprays are magnesium chloride in water, meant for the skin. You spray them on arms, legs or shoulders and rub them in, not into your mouth. They are sold for convenience and comfort rather than as a measured oral dose. If you want a counted daily amount of magnesium, choose an oral form from our magnesium supplements instead, where the milligrams per serving are stated on the label.
Sprays are often labelled in IU, so it helps to know the UK reference amounts. One microgram of vitamin D equals 40 IU.

Check the label rather than the format. Many multivitamin sprays contain vitamin A as retinyl acetate, and UK guidance advises against high vitamin A intakes in pregnancy, so a spray without vitamin A is the safer pick. Sprays with vitamin K1 or K2 are not suitable if you take anticoagulants (blood thinners) unless your GP agrees, because vitamin K affects how those medicines work. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on prescribed medication, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.
