Vitals Bilberry Carotenoid Complex (60 capsules) contains a combination of bilberry extract (Vaccinium myrtillus), extract from marigold (Tagetes erecta), saffron extract (Crocus sativus) and astaxanthin from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. Each capsule provides 160 mg bilberry extract (Mirtoselect®), standardised to 36% anthocyanins (57 mg), and 100 mg marigold extract with 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin. In addition, each capsule contains 20 mg saffron extract (Affroneye®) with 0.62 mg Crocuvisalides® and 4 mg astaxanthin (AstaBead®). The recommended dose is 1 capsule per day with a meal, so one pack lasts about 2 months. The capsules are plant-based and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

What is bilberry?
The bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a small, dark blue berry that naturally occurs in, among others, Northern and Central Europe. The bilberry is related to the cultivated blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) from the supermarket, but has a higher content of anthocyanins.
What are anthocyanins?
Anthocyanins are natural pigments found in plants. They give many fruits and vegetables their red, purple or blue colour, such as bilberries, blackberries and red cabbage.
What is marigold?
Marigold (Tagetes erecta) is a plant with large orange and yellow flowers, originally from Mexico and Central America. The flowers are naturally rich in lutein and zeaxanthin.
What is lutein?
Lutein is a carotenoid: a natural yellow pigment produced by plants. Lutein is found in foods such as kale, spinach and egg yolk.
What is saffron?
Saffron is obtained from the stigmas of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus) and is one of the most precious spices in the world. Saffron naturally contains various characteristic substances, such as crocin and safranal. The extract in this supplement is called Affroneye® and is made in Spain from saffron grown without chemical crop protection agents.
What is astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin is a deep red carotenoid naturally produced by, among others, microalgae. For example, it gives salmon, shrimp and lobster their pink-red colour. The astaxanthin in this supplement (AstaBead®) comes from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis and is cultivated in Iceland in a closed system.
Why do you take this supplement with a meal?
Lutein, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin are fat-soluble carotenoids. Therefore, it is recommended to take the capsule during a meal, preferably a meal that contains fat.
