What is berberine?
Berberine is a yellow plant compound found in various plants, including Indian barberry (Berberis aristata), Chinese goldthread (Coptis chinensis) and Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium). In this supplement, berberine is extracted from the root of Indian barberry, in the form of berberine HCl (hydrochloride).
What is bitter melon (Momordica charantia)?
Bitter melon, also known as Momordica, is an elongated, ridged fruit that naturally grows in tropical areas of Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. The fruit gets its name from its pronounced bitter taste and is used both as food and in herbal preparations.
What is milk thistle (Silybum marianum)?
Milk thistle is a type of thistle with striking, marbled leaves that naturally occurs in the Mediterranean region. The plant owes its name to a legend in which the white veins in the leaves are attributed to spilled milk.
What is silymarin?
Silymarin is the collective name for a group of compounds found naturally in the seeds of the milk thistle plant. It is the component to which milk thistle extracts are usually standardised.
What does standardised to 80% silymarin mean?
This means that the milk thistle seed extract used contains a guaranteed level of 80% silymarin. Due to this standardisation, the composition remains consistent between different batches of extract.
What is the difference between milk thistle powder and a standardised milk thistle extract?
Milk thistle powder consists of the dried and ground seeds of the plant, where the content of silymarin can vary per batch. A standardised extract is further concentrated to a fixed, consistent percentage of silymarin.
