NatureWise CLA 1300 mg (90 or 180 softgels) contains 1,300 mg of safflower seed oil per softgel, standardised to 95% CLA. This equates to approximately 1,235 mg CLA per softgel. CLA stands for conjugated linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid that occurs naturally in the meat and dairy from ruminants, such as cows and sheep. The oil is extracted from the seeds of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius), a thistle-like plant with bright yellow to orange flowers. You take 1 softgel per day with a meal, or up to 3 softgels per day spread over meals. A pack of 90 softgels will last 30 to 90 days; a pack of 180 softgels will last 60 to 180 days.
What is CLA?
CLA stands for conjugated linoleic acid. It is a collective term for variants of linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid. "Conjugated" means that the double bonds in the molecule are directly next to each other, with a single bond in between.
Where is CLA naturally found?
CLA is naturally found in the meat and dairy of ruminants, such as cows, sheep and goats. Examples include beef, lamb, milk, butter and cheese. The amounts in food are small.
What is the difference between linoleic acid and CLA?
Linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid found in many vegetable oils, such as sunflower oil and safflower oil. CLA consists of the same building blocks, but the double bonds are in a different place in the molecule. As a result, CLA has a different chemical structure.
How is CLA made from safflower oil?
Safflower oil is naturally rich in linoleic acid. For CLA supplements, this linoleic acid is converted into conjugated linoleic acid through a production process. This creates an oil with a high content of CLA.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) is an annual, thistle-like plant from the daisy family. The plant has bright yellow to orange flowers and has been cultivated for thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, the flowers were used as a dye for textiles. That is why safflower is also called bastard saffron. Safflower oil is pressed from the seeds.
