How a hair lotion differs from a foam, an oil or a serum
A lotion is a liquid you leave on your scalp or hair. You do not rinse it out. That is the main difference with a conditioner or a mask. Because it stays in place, the ingredients have hours to work, and the base of the lotion decides how comfortable those hours feel.

The base matters as much as the active ingredient
Two lotions can carry the same active and still behave very differently. Liquid solutions often contain propylene glycol, a carrier that helps the active pass into the skin. It is also the usual cause of an itchy, flaky scalp. Alcohol-based tonics dry within minutes and suit fine hair that goes limp fast. Water or glycerine-based lotions feel a little heavier and are kinder to a reactive scalp. If a previous lotion made you itch, read the carrier list before you blame the active.
Strength is only part of the story
With minoxidil in 2% and 5%, the higher strength works for more people, but it also brings more scalp irritation and more unwanted hair growth on the face. Women are usually advised to use the lower strength, or a 5% foam once a day. Using more than the measured 1 ml per application does not speed anything up. It mostly runs off and lands on your forehead.

With minoxidil, most people see the first fine hairs after two to four months, and a temporary increase in shedding in the first weeks is common. That shedding is the growth cycle resetting, not the lotion failing.
A lotion works where you put it, and only while you keep using it. How do I apply a scalp lotion properly?
Part your hair so the lotion reaches the skin, not just the hair. Apply the measured amount, usually 1 ml with a dropper or half a capful of foam, then spread it with your fingertips over the thinning area. Massage briefly and let it dry completely before you sleep or put on a hat. Wash your hands afterwards, so nothing transfers to your face.
Should I use a lotion on wet or dry hair?
For scalp lotions, dry or towel-dry hair is the rule. A wet scalp dilutes the product and spreads it beyond the area you meant to treat, which can cause irritation elsewhere. Styling and setting lotions are the exception: those are designed for damp hair, before blow-drying, because the heat sets the hold. Check the label, because the two types work in opposite ways.
How long before I see a result?
Longer than most people expect. With minoxidil, first fine regrowth is usually reported after two to four months of daily use, and the clearest change around the twelve-month mark. Scalp comfort lotions for dryness or flaking work faster, often within two to three weeks. Styling lotions work immediately. Take a photo in the same light every month, because slow change is very hard to judge in the mirror.
Is extra shedding at the start normal?
With growth lotions it is common. In the first weeks the growth cycle speeds up, so resting hairs are pushed out before new ones come through. This usually settles within four to six weeks. It feels like the opposite of progress, which is why many people stop too early. If shedding is heavy, keeps going past two months, or comes with a sore scalp, stop and speak to your GP or pharmacist.
Can women use the same lotions as men?
Mostly yes, but not at the same intensity. For minoxidil, women are usually advised to use the 2% strength, or a 5% foam once a day rather than twice. The reason is unwanted hair growth on the face and more scalp irritation at the higher dose. Minoxidil is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If your hair loss came on suddenly or in patches, get it looked at before you start.
Can I combine a lotion with my other hair products?
Yes, with a bit of timing. Apply the scalp lotion to a dry scalp and let it dry fully before you add styling products, otherwise they mix on the skin. Keep conditioner and masks on the lengths, not the roots. Rich oils for hair are best used on wash days, since a film of oil on the scalp slows the absorption of a water-based lotion.
What happens if I stop using a growth lotion?
The hair you gained is gradually lost again, usually over three to six months, and the scalp returns to where it would have been. A lotion does not change the cause of pattern hair loss, it keeps follicles active while you use it. That is worth knowing before you start, because it is a long-term routine rather than a course of treatment. If daily use is not realistic for you, discuss the alternatives with a pharmacist.
