Choosing between a B-complex and a single B vitamin
Eight vitamins under one letter
Vitamin B is not one nutrient but eight: thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), B6, biotin (B7), folate (B9) and B12. All eight are water-soluble, so your body keeps only small amounts and passes the rest out in urine. B12 is the exception, because the liver holds a reserve. That is why a steady daily intake matters more than one large dose.
Riboflavin, niacin, B6, folate and B12 each contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7 and B12 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism. These effects show up when your intake was too low to begin with. If your diet already covers your needs, taking more will not add more. The form on the label changes what you take
Two products can both say 500 mcg of B12 and still differ. B12 is sold as cyanocobalamin, a stable and well-studied form, or as methylcobalamin, which the body can use without converting it first. Folate comes as folic acid or as methylfolate, already in its active form. B6 appears as pyridoxine hydrochloride or as pyridoxal-5-phosphate, usually shortened to P-5-P. Niacin comes as nicotinic acid, which can cause a short skin flush, or as nicotinamide, which does not. Our single B12 products show how these forms are named on the pack.
A complete B-complex suits you when you want broad daily cover, for example alongside a plant-based or restricted diet. A single vitamin suits a clear reason: B12 without animal products, folate and folic acid when planning a pregnancy, or biotin as part of a hair and nails routine. Both routes work. The difference is precision: a complex spreads a modest amount across eight nutrients, while a single product lets you set one dose deliberately.

Who a B supplement genuinely helps
People on vegan or vegetarian diets, adults over 50 who absorb B12 from food less easily, and anyone eating little variety are the clearest cases. Pregnancy is a separate situation: UK advice points to a dedicated folic acid supplement, not a high-dose complex. If you would rather cover B vitamins together with vitamin D, iron and zinc, a daily multivitamin is often simpler, and cheaper per day than three separate pots.

Most people take theirs in the morning with breakfast. Food slows the passage through the stomach, which some people find gentler, and a fixed moment makes the habit easier to keep. B vitamins are not sedating, but if you notice you sleep less easily on evening doses, simply move them earlier. Consistency matters more than the exact hour, because water-soluble vitamins are not stored in large amounts.
The NHS gives amounts from supplements that are unlikely to cause harm. These are ceilings for supplement use, not daily targets, and they are not personal advice.

That is riboflavin, vitamin B2. It has a strong yellow pigment, and because it is water-soluble the amount your body does not use leaves in your urine within hours. The colour is a sign that the tablet dissolved and the surplus was excreted, not a sign of damage or waste. It appears with almost every B-complex and fades if you lower the dose or switch to a formula closer to the reference intake.
Give it two to three weeks of consistent daily use. If your intake was genuinely low, correcting it takes time, because the body has to refill tissue levels before anything changes in how you feel. Also be honest about the starting point: if your diet already supplies enough, a B-complex will mostly be excreted and you will notice nothing. That is not a fault in the product; it means you did not have a gap to fill.
Three groups stand out. People who eat no animal products, since B12 occurs naturally almost only in meat, fish, eggs and dairy, which is why B12 is a standing recommendation on plant-based diets. Adults over 50, because stomach acid production falls and food-bound B12 becomes harder to absorb. And anyone with a narrow, repetitive diet or a reduced appetite. Outside these groups, a varied diet usually covers the eight B vitamins.
UK advice is specific: take a 400 microgram folic acid supplement daily until you are 12 weeks pregnant, starting before you conceive. Some women are advised a higher 5 mg dose and should speak to their doctor first. Doses of folic acid above 1 mg can mask the symptoms of a B12 deficiency. This is why a dedicated folic acid product, or a pregnancy formula built around it, fits better than a general high-dose B-complex.
Because B6 is the one B vitamin with a clear dose ceiling in UK guidance. The NHS advises not taking more than 10 mg a day from supplements unless a doctor says otherwise, and notes that 200 mg or more a day can cause peripheral neuropathy, a loss of feeling in the arms and legs. That usually improves after stopping, but after months at high intakes it can persist. The effect between 10 mg and 200 mg is unclear. For that reason we keep B6 modest in the complexes we stock, and we would rather explain the limit than sell around it.
