NOW Foods Enzymes (90 capsules) contains a combination of pancreatin and ox bile extract. Each capsule provides 300 mg ox bile extract (at least 45% total bile acids) and 200 mg pancreatin 10X of porcine origin, with amylase, protease and lipase. The formula is packed in a vegetable capsule made from hypromellose. At the recommended dosage of 1 capsule per day, one package is sufficient for about three months.
Ox bile extract is an extract derived from bovine bile. In this supplement it is standardised to at least 45% total bile acids, ensuring a consistent content of these natural bile components.
Bile acids are natural compounds found in bile. Examples include cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid. On food supplements, the total content of bile acids is often stated.
Pancreatin is a natural enzyme complex from the pig’s pancreas. It consists of three main groups of enzymes: amylase, protease and lipase.
Amylase is an enzyme. It belongs to the group of carbohydrate-splitting enzymes and is part of the pancreatin complex in this supplement.
Protease is a collective term for enzymes that break down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. In this formula, protease is derived from pancreatin.
Lipase is an enzyme that is part of the pancreatin complex. It specialises in breaking down fats and naturally occurs in the animal digestive system.
The potency of enzymes is determined by their enzyme activity and not just by weight. That’s why enzymes are shown in USP units (United States Pharmacopeia).
