How digestive enzymes, live cultures and prebiotic fibre differ
Three different jobs, three different products
Digestion means breaking food down into parts small enough for your body to absorb. The supplements here act at different points in that process, so they are not interchangeable.
- Digestive enzymes work during the meal itself. Amylase acts on carbohydrates, protease on protein, lipase on fat, and lactase on lactose, the sugar in milk. Of these, lactase has an approved European claim: it improves lactose digestion in people who have difficulty digesting lactose.
- Live cultures are bacteria that join the population already living in your gut. They do not break down your meal.
- Prebiotic fibre feeds those bacteria. Chicory inulin contributes to normal bowel function by increasing stool frequency. Wheat bran fibre contributes to an acceleration of intestinal transit.
- Bitter herbs such as artichoke, ginger and peppermint have a long tradition in European kitchens, but no approved claim for digestion. We say that plainly rather than dressing it up.
If your main complaint is feeling heavy and overfull an hour after a large meal, most people start with an enzyme complex. If the pattern is broader and stretches over weeks, cultures and fibre are the more logical route.
Labels tell you more than product names
Enzyme strength is only comparable in FCC units of activity, the standard measure of how much work an enzyme actually does. Two blends with the same milligram total can differ several times over in activity. The shell matters too: enzymes are fragile proteins, and a capsule shields them better than a pressed tablet. With live culture supplements, look for named strains and a count guaranteed to the end of shelf life, not just at the time of production.

When is the best time to take digestive enzymes?
At the start of the meal, or with the first few bites. Enzymes only work where they meet food, so they need to be in the stomach as the meal arrives. Taken half an hour later, much of the meal has already moved on. Most enzyme complexes are dosed per main meal, up to three times a day. Always follow the dose on the label, since activity per capsule differs a lot between products.
How long before I notice anything?
It depends on the group. Enzymes act inside the same meal, so you can judge them after a handful of meals with the foods that usually bother you. Live cultures and prebiotic fibre change conditions in the gut gradually: expect effects after two to three weeks of consistent daily use. If nothing has shifted after four weeks of steady use, the product or the approach is probably not the right one for you.

Yes, they do different jobs and do not compete. In practice people take the enzyme with the meal and the culture at a fixed daily moment, often breakfast or bedtime. Keeping them apart is not necessary, but it does make it easier to tell which one is doing something. If you start both on the same day and something feels off, you will not know which to drop.
Why does fibre make me windier when I start?
Because fermentable fibre is food for your gut bacteria, and gas is a normal by-product of that fermentation. A sudden jump from a low-fibre diet to a full dose gives the bacteria more than they are used to. Build up over one to two weeks and drink enough water, since fibre draws water into the bowel. People with a sensitive gut often do better with a gentler, less fermentable fibre.
Do digestive enzymes survive stomach acid?
Not automatically, and this is where products differ most. Stomach acid can inactivate enzymes before they reach the small intestine, so manufacturers choose enzyme strains that stay stable across a range of pH values, or use a capsule that releases further down. Plant-sourced blends and pancreatin from animal sources behave differently here.
