Vitals Enzyme Formula Pro (90 capsules) contains 9 different enzymes in one formula. The BioCore® Optimum Complete enzyme complex contains two types of protease, amylase, glucoamylase, alpha-galactosidase, lactase, invertase and lipase, and is supplemented with the enzyme prolyl-oligopeptidase (Tolerase® G). All enzymes are produced by fermentation with micro-organisms, such as yeasts, and according to the manufacturer remain stable even in a highly acidic environment. Take 1 capsule with water at breakfast, lunch and dinner, so the product easily fits into your daily meal routine. One pack is sufficient for approximately 30 days, and the product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
An enzyme is a protein that enables a specific chemical reaction, without being consumed itself or changing form. The word comes from the Greek ‘enzymos’, which means ‘in yeast’. Each enzyme has its own acidity (pH) and temperature at which its activity is highest.
With enzymes, it is common to list the enzyme activity rather than the weight. There are international measurement methods for this, with a different unit for each enzyme, such as HUT, DU, ALU or FIP. DU, for example, stands for Dextrinizing Unit. The higher the value, the higher the enzyme activity.
BioCore® Optimum Complete from Deerland and Tolerase® G from DSM are both produced by fermentation. Micro-organisms such as yeasts are cultured on a nutrient medium, after which they convert the nutrients in that medium into enzymes.
Protease is the collective name for enzymes that split proteins into smaller parts, such as peptides and amino acids. Proteases occur naturally in, among others, pineapple (bromelain) and papaya (papain).
Amylase splits starch into shorter carbohydrate chains. Glucoamylase splits off glucose units from the end of these chains. The activity of glucoamylase is measured in AGU (Amyloglucosidase Unit). This product contains 30 AGU glucoamylase per 3 capsules.
The manufacturer advises taking the capsules at breakfast, lunch and dinner. The enzymes in this formula are targeted at components commonly found in foods, such as proteins, starch, sugars and fats. That's why the intake is aligned with main meals.
