Nordic Naturals ProEPA with Concentrated GLA (2 softgels per daily dose) combines purified deep sea fish oil with borage seed oil (Borago officinalis). Each daily dose provides 1217 mg omega 3 fatty acids, of which 850 mg is EPA and 220 mg DHA, supplemented with 396 mg omega 6 fatty acids, including 257 mg GLA (gamma-linolenic acid). The omega 3 fatty acids are present in triglyceride form (rTG), similar to the natural structure found in fish. The softgels have a fresh lemon flavor.
GLA stands for gamma-linolenic acid. This is an omega 6 fatty acid that naturally occurs in oils such as borage seed oil (borage). In this formula, the GLA comes from Borago officinalis.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are both long-chain fatty acids from the omega 3 family, naturally found in fatty fish.
Triglyceride form (rTG) refers to the natural molecular structure in which omega 3 fatty acids are found in fish. In this form, the fatty acids are attached to a glycerol molecule, similar to how they are present in food.
The best-known omega 3 fatty acids are ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). ALA is mainly found in plant oils such as flaxseed oil, while EPA and DHA are mainly present in fatty fish and fish oil.
Fatty acids are divided into saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acids have no double bonds in their chemical structure and are mainly found in animal products such as butter, cheese, and meat, but also in coconut oil and palm oil. Unsaturated fatty acids contain one or more double bonds and are mainly found in plant oils, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish.
Omega 3, 6 and 9 are types of unsaturated fatty acids. The difference lies in the position of the first double bond in the carbon chain. Omega 3 fatty acids, like ALA, EPA, and DHA, are found in fatty fish, algae, and certain plant oils. Omega 6 fatty acids are found in sunflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil and nuts. Omega 9 fatty acids, such as oleic acid, are mainly present in olive oil, avocado, and almonds.
The difference lies in the chemical structure. Saturated fatty acids have only single bonds between carbon atoms, while unsaturated fatty acids contain one or more double bonds. This structure influences, among other things, whether a fat is solid or liquid at room temperature.
