Nordic Naturals ProDHA Xtra (60 softgels) is a high-dose, DHA-dominant omega 3 formula based on purified deep-sea fish oil. Each daily serving provides 1660 mg of total omega 3 fatty acids, including 960 mg DHA and 410 mg EPA. The fatty acids are present in triglyceride form (rTG), similar to their natural structure in fish. The softgels have a pleasant strawberry flavor. This formula is suitable for those who choose a higher daily intake of DHA as part of a conscious lifestyle.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are both long-chain fatty acids from the omega 3 family that naturally occur in oily fish.
Triglyceride form (rTG) refers to the natural molecular structure in which omega 3 fatty acids occur in fish. In this form, the fatty acids are bound to a glycerol molecule, similar to how they are present in food.
The most well-known omega 3 fatty acids are ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). ALA is mainly found in plant oils such as flaxseed oil, while EPA and DHA are especially present in oily fish and fish oil.
Fatty acids are divided into saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acids have no double bonds in their chemical structure and are mainly found in animal products such as butter, cheese, and meat, but also in coconut oil and palm oil. Unsaturated fatty acids contain one or more double bonds and are mainly found in plant oils, nuts, seeds, and oily fish.
Omega 3, 6, and 9 are types of unsaturated fatty acids. The difference lies in the position of the first double bond in the carbon chain. Omega 3 fatty acids, such as ALA, EPA, and DHA, are found in oily fish, algae, and certain plant oils. Omega 6 fatty acids are found in sunflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil, and nuts. Omega 9 fatty acids, such as oleic acid, are mainly present in olive oil, avocado, and almonds.
The difference is in the chemical structure. Saturated fatty acids have only single bonds between carbon atoms, while unsaturated fatty acids contain one or more double bonds. This structure influences, among other things, whether a fat is solid or liquid at room temperature.
Omega 3 fatty acids are naturally oily. A softgel capsule is suitable for liquid ingredients such as fish oil and seals the oil well against air and light. This helps maintain quality and taste. In addition, softgels are easy to swallow and contain the oil in liquid form, similar to how fats are consumed through food.
