Nordic Naturals ProDHA (120 softgels) is a DHA-dominant omega-3 supplement based on purified deep-sea fish oil from anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and herring. The formula contains a higher ratio of DHA compared to EPA and the fatty acids are in triglyceride form (rTG). Each daily dose provides 830 mg of total omega-3 fatty acids, of which 480 mg is DHA and 205 mg is EPA. The softgels have a pleasant strawberry flavor.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are both long-chain fatty acids from the omega-3 family that naturally occur in oily fish.
Triglyceride form (rTG) refers to the natural molecular structure in which omega-3 fatty acids occur in fish. In this form, the fatty acids are bound to a glycerol molecule, similar to how they are found in foods.
The best-known omega-3 fatty acids are ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). ALA is mainly found in plant oils such as flaxseed oil, while EPA and DHA are primarily present in oily fish and fish oil.
Fatty acids are divided into saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acids have no double bonds in their chemical structure and are mainly found in animal products such as butter, cheese, and meat, but also in coconut oil and palm oil. Unsaturated fatty acids contain one or more double bonds and are mainly found in plant oils, nuts, seeds, and oily fish.
Omega-3, 6, and 9 are types of unsaturated fatty acids. The difference lies in the position of the first double bond in the carbon chain. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as ALA, EPA, and DHA, are found in oily fish, algae, and certain plant oils. Omega-6 fatty acids can be found in sunflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil, and nuts. Omega-9 fatty acids, such as oleic acid, are mainly present in olive oil, avocado, and almonds.
The difference is in the chemical structure. Saturated fatty acids only have single bonds between carbon atoms, while unsaturated fatty acids have one or more double bonds. This structure affects whether a fat is solid or liquid at room temperature.
Omega-3 fatty acids are naturally oily. A softgel capsule is suitable for liquid ingredients like fish oil and seals the oil well against air and light. This helps preserve quality and flavor. Additionally, softgels are easy to swallow and contain the oil in liquid form, similar to how fats are consumed via food.
