Forms and doses differ more than the labels suggest

- Vitamin B12: methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are forms your body can use directly. Cyanocobalamin has to be converted first, which works for most people but not for everyone.
- Iron: bisglycinate is usually gentler on the stomach than sulfate at the same amount of elemental iron, so people stay consistent with it.
- Magnesium: citrate and bisglycinate dissolve well. Oxide packs more magnesium per tablet but is absorbed poorly, so the label number flatters it.
- B-complex: sensible when your diet is patchy, less so when only one B vitamin is low.
Dose logic matters as much as form. A complex at a hundred times the reference intake is not automatically better, because your body passes on what it cannot use. With single products such as a targeted vitamin B12 you can aim at the gap you actually have.

When is the best time of day to take them?
Take B vitamins and any caffeine-containing product earlier in the day, since some people find them activating in the evening. Iron absorbs better away from tea, coffee and dairy, and pairs well with a vitamin C source such as orange juice. Many people prefer their magnesium later in the day, mainly because it fits their routine. Fat-soluble nutrients belong with a meal. Beyond that, the best time is the time you will remember.
How long before I notice a difference?
Plan on two to three weeks of daily use before you judge a product, and longer if you were substantially low in iron or B12, because your body rebuilds stores gradually. Nothing here works like a stimulant, so there is no first-dose effect to look for. What usually changes first is the depth of the afternoon dip rather than your peak. Are caffeine shots and energy drinks the same thing as this?
No, and mixing them up leads to disappointment. Caffeine borrows alertness for a few hours; it does nothing about a nutrient gap and can push tiredness into the next day if it disturbs your sleep. Is vitamin B12 a special case for vegans and people over 50?
Yes, for two different reasons. B12 occurs naturally in animal foods, so on a plant-based diet a supplement or fortified food is the reliable route. From around 50, absorption from food often declines, so intake and blood level can drift apart. The NHS puts adult need at about 1.5 micrograms a day and notes that up to 2mg a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm, which is why higher label numbers are common and not alarming. Have your level checked rather than guessing.
