Psyllium husk is the outer coat of the seed of Plantago ovata, a plant grown mainly in India. UK labels sometimes call it ispaghula husk, and in South Asia it is known as isabgol. All three names mean the same ingredient. Around seven parts in ten of the husk is soluble fibre: the type that soaks up water and forms a soft gel. That gel is the point. Psyllium is not absorbed into the blood, it does its work inside the gut. Every dose needs a full glass of water, and it belongs at least two hours away from prescription medicines, because fibre can slow how they are absorbed. Capsules are the most expensive per gram, because you need several to match a teaspoon of powder.
Start low, around a level teaspoon or two capsules, and build up over a week or two. Sudden jumps in fibre are the usual cause of wind and bloating, and it normally settles as your gut adjusts. Mix powder into a full glass of water and drink it immediately, before it thickens. With capsules, drink 200 ml to 250 ml of water alongside. If you feel uncomfortable, drop back to a smaller dose and rise more slowly.
Some people notice a difference in bowel habit within a few days. A fair expectation is two to three weeks of consistent daily use before you judge it, and studies on regularity often run four weeks or longer. Effects on cholesterol levels are slower still and depend on reaching 7 g of husk a day. Psyllium works while you take it, so it is a daily habit rather than a short course.
Leave at least two hours between psyllium and any prescription medicine. The gel can slow how quickly a medicine is absorbed, which is a timing problem rather than a reason to avoid fibre.
