MethylPro

Folic acid is the synthetic form used in most supplements and fortified foods. Your body has to convert it in several steps before it can use it. L-methylfolate is already the converted form, so it skips that process. Some people carry a common gene variant (MTHFR) that slows the conversion, and for them the methylated form is easier to use. Folate itself does the same jobs in the body either way.

UK reference figures are far lower than the milligram strengths in this range. They are dietary reference values, not dosage advice.

For context, 400 mcg is 0.4 mg.

Start with what you want alongside the folate, then pick the strength your practitioner or your own routine calls for.

Lower strengths let you step up gradually.

One capsule daily with food is the usual pattern, and food also softens any stomach sensitivity. Morning suits most people, because some report feeling more alert on methylfolate and would rather not have that in the evening. Take it at the same time each day so you can judge the effect fairly. Folate is water soluble, so consistency matters more than timing. For the multi-milligram strengths, follow the advice of the practitioner who suggested them.

Folate and vitamin B12 work in the same pathway, which is why the cofactor formula includes B12 and why methylated B-complex products exist. There is also a safety reason to pay attention: a high folate intake can hide the blood signs of a B12 shortfall, so the shortfall goes unnoticed. Have your B12 checked before starting high-dose folate, and browse our vitamin B12 options if you need to cover both.

Speak to your midwife or GP first. UK advice for anyone who could become pregnant is 400 mcg of folic acid daily, from before conception until week 12, and that advice names folic acid specifically because that is the form the evidence rests on. It applies even to people with an MTHFR variant. The milligram strengths in this range are much higher than that figure and are not a substitute for the standard pregnancy recommendation.

This is the most common complaint we hear, and it usually comes down to jumping straight to a high strength. Folate feeds a pathway that also needs B6, B12 and magnesium, and the response to a large step up varies a lot between individuals. Two practical approaches: start at a low strength such as 1 mg and increase slowly, or choose the cofactor formula so the supporting nutrients are present. If restlessness persists, lower the dose and check with your practitioner.

The brand was acquired by Allergy Research Group, which also owns Metabolic Maintenance and Optimox, and the websites were merged into one. According to the brand, the formulas themselves were kept as they were. For you as a buyer that means the same strengths and the same capsule base, under a wider company umbrella. We buy directly from the brand rather than through intermediaries, so what reaches you is authentic, and each batch passes our own checks plus independent lab spot-checks.
