What to look for in supplements for over 50s
After 55, a few things change in the way your body handles nutrients. Stomach acid production often drops, which makes vitamin B12 from food harder to take up. The skin also makes less vitamin D from sunlight than it did at 25. So the useful choices in this age group are mostly about form and absorption, not about ever higher doses.

Vitamin D through the darker months, B12 or a B-complex, omega-3 from fish or algae oil, and minerals for bones such as calcium, magnesium and vitamin K2. In the UK, adults are advised to consider 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day in autumn and winter, and over-65s all year round. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. A broad daily multivitamin covers the basics, but it rarely holds a full bone dose of calcium or magnesium.
Form matters more after 55 than it did at 30
- B12 as methylcobalamin under the tongue. It passes through the lining of the mouth, so less depends on stomach acid. Vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
- Vitamin D3 in oil, as drops or softgels. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so it needs a little fat to be absorbed well. Take it with a meal. You will find both formats in our vitamin D3 range.
- Magnesium as citrate or glycinate, not oxide. Oxide holds a lot of magnesium on paper, but the body absorbs little of it. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function.
- Liquids, drops and sprays. Practical if large tablets are hard to swallow, which is one of the most common reasons people stop a routine.

B12 from food is bound to protein and needs stomach acid to be released. Acid production often falls with age, and some long-term medicines reduce it further. That is why the amount in your diet can look fine while your intake still falls short. Sublingual drops or a spray bypass part of that step. It depends on what you want from it. A multivitamin is one tablet, one habit, and it covers a broad base at modest amounts. Separate products let you set the dose that matters to you, for example more vitamin D in winter or a proper magnesium dose in the evening. Many people combine both: a multivitamin as the floor, plus one or two targeted products. Check for overlap so you do not double up on the same nutrient.
Split them by how they are absorbed. Vitamin D, vitamin K2 and omega-3 are fat-soluble, so take them with your main meal that contains some fat. B vitamins fit well with breakfast. Magnesium is often taken in the evening, simply because that suits most routines. Calcium and iron compete for uptake, so keep them a few hours apart. Tea and coffee with a meal reduce iron absorption.
Not automatically. UK guidance is cautious here: iron is best taken only when there is a known reason, because low iron in later life can have a cause that deserves looking into. High calcium doses can also upset the stomach. Many people already reach a reasonable calcium intake through dairy or fortified alternatives. Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones, so the aim is a sufficient total intake from food plus supplement, not the highest number on the shelf. Ask your GP if you are unsure.
Be concrete about it. Nutrients that affect energy release, such as B12, may be noticeable within two to three weeks of consistent use if your intake was low. Vitamin D levels build over weeks to a couple of months, which is why winter supplementation is started early rather than in January. Bone-related minerals work on a scale of months, because bone renews slowly. None of this shows up as a sudden difference, and a product promising that would not pass our checks.
