After 55, a few things change in the way your body handles nutrients. Stomach acid production often drops, which makes vitamin B12 from food harder to take up. The skin also makes less vitamin D from sunlight than it did at 25. So the useful choices in this age group are mostly about form and absorption, not about ever higher doses.
Vitamin D through the darker months, B12 or a B-complex, omega-3 from fish or algae oil, and minerals for bones such as calcium, magnesium and vitamin K2. In the UK, adults are advised to consider 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day in autumn and winter, and over-65s all year round. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. A broad daily multivitamin covers the basics, but it rarely holds a full bone dose of calcium or magnesium.
We judge three things: the form of the nutrient, the dose, and whether a combination genuinely makes sense. For this age group that means B12 as methylcobalamin, vitamin D3 in oil rather than a dry tablet, and magnesium as citrate or glycinate. We are brand-neutral: we stock what delivers, not what pays best. We buy directly from the brands, so you get what the label says, and our compliance team checks every product before it goes live. We test products ourselves and independent labs spot-check batches. We would rather explain one choice than sell you a longer ingredient list. Read how we select.
This selection is for you if you want a routine you can keep up, not a cupboard full of jars. First honest point: supplements work alongside food, they do not replace good meals. Second: give a new routine two to three weeks of consistent use before you judge it, and longer for minerals aimed at bones, because bone turnover is slow. That is not a reason to skip them, it is a reason to buy a size you will actually finish.
If you take prescription medicines, speak to your GP or pharmacist first. Vitamin K can interfere with anticoagulants such as warfarin, and iron is best taken only when there is a known reason for it. Buying for a parent instead of yourself? Our collections by age and life stage make that easier.
Most start with vitamin D, because the skin makes less of it with age and UK winters give little to work with. Vitamin B12 comes next, since lower stomach acid makes it harder to take up from food. After that, omega-3 from fish or algae oil, and minerals linked to bones such as calcium, magnesium and vitamin K2. A 50+ multivitamin can replace several of these at once, if the amounts inside are sensible.
