Choosing vitamins by age: what really changes and what does not
Nutrient needs change with age, though less dramatically than most product labels suggest. Two things genuinely shift. The first is how much of a nutrient your body needs. The second is the form you can realistically take and absorb. A one-year-old needs drops from a pipette. A fast-growing teenager mainly needs calcium and iron from food, with a supplement only filling the gaps. Someone of seventy often does better with a vitamin B12 form that does not depend on strong stomach acid. Age is a useful starting point, not a diagnosis.
One UK recommendation applies at almost every age: vitamin D. The Department of Health and Social Care advises 10 micrograms, or 400 IU, a day for children from one year old and for adults. Babies and children aged 1 to 4 should take it all year round. Everyone else is advised to consider a daily supplement in autumn and winter, because British sunlight is too weak from October to March. The vitamin D3 products we stock are therefore the busiest corner of this collection.
Growing bodies and older bodies ask for different things
For children and teenagers, food comes first and a supplement fills gaps. Fussy eating, a vegan diet or a heavy sports timetable are the usual reasons parents end up here. Our selection for teenagers stays with modest doses, since children reach safe upper limits much sooner than adults. Later in life the reasoning flips. Absorption of vitamin B12 falls with age, appetite often shrinks, and interactions matter more. Vitamin K, for instance, affects how the blood thinner warfarin works, so speak to your GP or pharmacist before you start.
Form decides whether a supplement is actually taken
- Drops: for babies and toddlers, dosed with a pipette or on a spoon.
- Chewables and gummies: for children who refuse tablets. We prefer versions without added sugar.
- Capsules and tablets: the standard adult choice and usually the lowest cost per day.
- Liquids and sprays: helpful when swallowing large tablets becomes a nuisance, which is why they feature in our range for over-55s.
How we choose per life stage
We judge three things: the form, the dose and whether the combination makes sense for that age. In practice that means drops with a clear microgram figure per pipette, chewables without added sugar, and no adult-strength multivitamin simply relabelled for children. We are brand-neutral: we stock what delivers, not what pays us most, and we only carry brands we stand behind. Every product passes our compliance team, we test products ourselves, and independent labs spot-check batches. After more than ten years, we would rather explain why we left something out. Keep expectations realistic. Most people notice nothing in the first days; with daily use, allow two to three weeks, and some nutrients simply keep a normal function ticking over without a felt effect. Frequently asked questions
It groups supplements by the age and situation of the person taking them, rather than by ingredient. A newborn, a toddler, a teenager, an adult and someone over 55 need different amounts and, just as importantly, different forms. Sorting this way saves you comparing twenty labels. It also makes the dose easier to check, because a product built for a four-year-old should never carry adult amounts of vitamin A or vitamin D.
Not everyone. A varied diet covers most needs at most ages. UK guidance names two clear exceptions. All children aged 6 months to 5 years are advised to have daily drops with vitamins A, C and D, and everyone in the UK is advised to consider 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily in autumn and winter. Beyond that, supplements make sense when something is genuinely missing: a restricted diet, little sun, or low appetite.
UK advice uses the same daily amount for almost everyone, but the safe ceiling differs by age.

We would not. Halving a tablet gives you an uncertain amount, and the problem is not only the size of the dose. Adult products can contain nutrients children reach the safe limit on quickly, notably vitamin A and vitamin D. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body, so a small daily excess adds up. Use a product made for the age group and follow the stated dose on the label.
Some are, some mainly carry a different number on the box. The genuine differences are usually more vitamin D, more vitamin B12, and little or no iron, since iron needs fall after the menopause. That is sensible reasoning, not marketing. If a 50+ formula costs noticeably more than a comparable one from our multivitamin range without those differences, the age label is doing the work rather than the formula.
Usually not, and this catches many parents out. Infant formula is already fortified, so babies taking more than 500 ml a day should not be given extra vitamin drops. Breastfed babies are advised to have a daily vitamin D supplement of 8.5 to 10 micrograms from birth, whether or not the mother takes one. Once formula intake drops below 500 ml a day, typically around weaning, drops with vitamins A, C and D come into play.
Three things. First, medication: vitamin K influences how warfarin works, and other products can interact too, so ask your GP or pharmacist. Second, the dose ceiling: stay under 100 micrograms of vitamin D a day unless a doctor advises otherwise. Third, absorption: the stomach releases less acid with age, so vitamin B12 from food is taken up less well, which is why B12 appears in most sensible formulas for this group.
