What weight management supplements can and cannot do
Weight management comes down to energy balance: taking in less than you use. Supplements do not change that rule. What a good one can do is make a lower calorie intake easier to keep up, or help you hold on to muscle while you eat less.
Very few substances carry an approved European claim for body weight. Glucomannan is one of them. It is a fibre from the konjac root that swells in water and fills part of the stomach. In the context of an energy-restricted diet it contributes to weight loss, with 3 g a day in three doses of 1 g, taken with one or two glasses of water before meals. Meal replacement products have their own approved claims: replacing two daily meals contributes to weight loss, replacing one contributes to keeping weight off afterwards. The fibre on its own sits in our Glucomannan range.
The forms differ more than the labels suggest
- Glucomannan capsules: simple to dose. Swallow them whole with a large glass of water, never open them.
- Glucomannan powder: cheaper per gram, but it thickens within a minute, so stir and drink straight away.
- Meal replacement shakes: they fix the portion for you. Useful if one specific meal is where your plan slips.
- Diet protein powder: protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass, which matters while you are eating less.
- Chromium: chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. See the tablets and drops with chromium.
How we choose what goes in this collection
This range is deliberately narrow. We look at three things: the form, the dose, and whether a combination makes sense. Glucomannan only meets its approved claim at 1 g per portion, so we skip capsules that hide 200 mg inside a long blend. Chromium we keep in well absorbed forms and sensible doses. Fat burners built on heavy caffeine plus a list of extracts we leave on the shelf, because the promise runs ahead of the evidence. We buy directly from the brands, our compliance team checks every label before it goes live, and we test products ourselves. How we select our brands.
Who this collection suits
These products suit adults who already have a plan: a calorie-controlled diet, some regular movement, and a reason to want extra support at a specific point, usually appetite between meals or protein intake on low-calorie days. Be realistic about scale. In pooled trials, glucomannan added roughly a kilogram of extra weight loss over a couple of months on top of dieting. That is a genuine nudge, not a shortcut, and it is worth it mainly if the rest of your routine is already in place. Give any product two to three weeks of consistent use before you judge it, and judge it by whether meals feel easier to manage, not by the scales on day four.
If you are looking for products grouped around a single aim instead of a whole category, browse the supplements for losing weight. And if you take prescribed medicine, including medicines for blood sugar, speak to your GP or pharmacist first. Fibre supplements can slow the absorption of tablets taken at the same moment.
Frequently asked questions
What are weight management supplements?
They are food supplements meant to be used alongside a calorie-controlled diet, not instead of one. Most contain one of four things: a viscous fibre such as glucomannan, a mineral involved in metabolism such as chromium, protein to help maintain muscle mass while you eat less, or a plant extract with caffeine. They are not medicines. Prescription weight loss treatments are a separate category with different rules and different evidence.
Do weight management supplements actually work?
Some help a little, in a narrow way. Glucomannan has an approved European claim for weight loss within an energy-restricted diet, and in pooled trials the extra loss was around a kilogram over up to eight weeks. Meal replacements work mainly because they remove decisions and fix portions. Nothing here works without a calorie deficit. We would rather you knew the size of the effect in advance than felt let down after a month.
Which form should I choose?
It depends on where your plan actually breaks down: hunger, portion size, or protein intake.
| Form | Main role | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Glucomannan capsules | Fullness before meals | Snacking between meals |
| Glucomannan powder | Same, mixed in water | Lower cost per dose |
| Meal replacement shake | Fixed portion and calories | One unreliable meal |
| Diet protein powder | Maintenance of muscle mass | Training in a deficit |
| Chromium tablets | Macronutrient metabolism | Carbohydrate-heavy diets |
Start with one, not three.
Which weight-related claims are approved in Europe?
Only a short list, and each one comes with conditions on the amount used.
| Substance or product | Approved claim | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Glucomannan | Contributes to weight loss | 3 g daily, 3 x 1 g before meals |
| Glucomannan | Normal blood cholesterol | 4 g daily |
| Meal replacement | Contributes to weight loss | Replaces 2 daily meals |
| Meal replacement | Weight maintenance after loss | Replaces 1 daily meal |
The glucomannan claim applies only within an energy-restricted diet.
Source: European CommissionWhen and how should I take glucomannan?
Take it before a meal, not with it or after it. The fibre needs time to swell so it takes up space in the stomach. The approved conditions are 1 g per dose, three times a day, each with one or two large glasses of water. Capsules must be swallowed whole and never opened. Powder should be drunk immediately, because it thickens fast. Anyone with swallowing difficulties should avoid it, and everyone should take it with plenty of fluid.
Can I take these supplements with my medication?
Check with your GP or pharmacist first, especially if you take medicine for blood sugar or thyroid function. Viscous fibres such as glucomannan can slow how quickly a tablet is absorbed when both are taken at the same moment, so spacing them apart is usually advised. Chromium is also worth mentioning to your prescriber if you use blood glucose medication. Supplements in this category are not intended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
How long before I should expect to notice anything?
Give it two to three weeks of consistent daily use. Fibre before meals often changes how full you feel within days, but weight itself moves slowly and unevenly, because water and food in transit mask real change. A month is a fair review point. If nothing about your appetite or portion sizes feels different by then, the product is not doing its job for you and the money is better spent on protein or on food that fills you up.
What should I take on GLP-1 medication or after bariatric surgery?
Both situations sharply reduce how much you eat, so the risk shifts from too many calories to too few nutrients. Protein and micronutrient coverage become the priority, not appetite suppression. Adding a bulking fibre on top of an already suppressed appetite rarely makes sense and can add discomfort. For products grouped around this situation, see our range for supplements after gastric bypass, and follow the plan your clinic gave you.
