Take it with or just after a meal. Zinc salts are absorbed slightly better without food, but that is also when they most often cause nausea or a burning feeling, especially at higher doses and with sulphate. A meal buffers the mineral and makes daily use realistic, which matters more than a small absorption edge you abandon after a week. If mornings feel rough, move it to lunch or dinner.
Zinc and iron compete for the same route into the body, so a large iron dose taken at the same moment reduces zinc uptake. Leave two to three hours between a zinc supplement and separate iron or calcium tablets. Magnesium is different: the two are routinely combined in ZMA-style products with vitamin B6 and that works fine. Pairing zinc with vitamin C in one dose causes no absorption problem.
Zinc and copper use overlapping transport in the gut, so a high zinc intake kept up for months can lower copper levels. That is one of the reasons behind the 25 mg supplement ceiling. Products that add roughly 1 mg of copper to 15 or 25 mg of zinc are trying to keep that balance. At a normal daily dose the risk is small, but if you plan to take zinc for a long stretch, a formula with copper is the more sensible pick.
There is no sensation to wait for. If your intake was low, blood levels respond within weeks, but the visible things people care about follow the pace of new tissue. Nails grow slowly and hair even more slowly, so judge that after two to three months of consistent daily use, not after a fortnight.
