Choosing a calcium supplement that fits your diet
What calcium does and how much you actually need
Calcium is the mineral your body holds most of, and nearly all of it sits in your bones and teeth. Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It also contributes to normal muscle function, normal blood clotting and the normal function of digestive enzymes. Your body cannot make calcium itself, so every milligram comes from food or from a supplement.
In the UK, adults are advised to get 700 mg a day from food, drinks and supplements combined. Two or three servings of dairy or fortified plant milk usually cover that on their own. A supplement is therefore a top-up, not a base. If your diet already gets you there, the honest answer is that you may be better served by another product in our minerals range.
Forms differ in acid, elemental content and comfort
The number on the front of the bottle is often the weight of the whole compound, not the calcium itself. A tablet can state calcium carbonate 1,250 mg and deliver 500 mg of elemental calcium, which is the part your body counts. Compare products on that figure and the picture changes quickly.
Calcium carbonate is compact and low in cost, but it needs stomach acid, so it belongs with a meal. Calcium citrate works with or without food and is often gentler for people who find carbonate heavy. Seaweed-derived calcium suits plant-based routines. Who a calcium top-up genuinely suits
A supplement earns its place when your intake keeps falling short. That is common if you:
- avoid dairy through allergy, lactose intolerance or a vegan diet without fortified alternatives
- eat small portions or skip meals, for example after gastric surgery
- have been advised by a GP or pharmacist to raise your intake
- follow a restricted diet, for instance with coeliac disease
Set your expectations honestly. Calcium works quietly over years, and bone density changes slowly, so there is nothing to feel from week to week. What you can do is make the routine easy to keep: a form your stomach tolerates, a serving you can split across the day, and enough vitamin D alongside it. What is elemental calcium and why does it matter?
Elemental calcium is the actual calcium in the tablet, as opposed to the weight of the whole compound. Calcium carbonate is roughly 40 percent calcium by weight, calcium citrate around 21 percent. That is why a 1,000 mg citrate capsule can deliver about 210 mg of calcium. When you compare two products, compare the elemental figure per daily serving. A bold front label means little if that number is missing or hidden in the small print.
When is the best time to take calcium?
Consistency matters more than the clock, but the form sets the rules. Take carbonate with a meal, because it needs stomach acid to dissolve. Citrate is flexible and works on an empty stomach. If you take more than about 500 mg a day from supplements, split it into two smaller servings, morning and evening. The body absorbs calcium less efficiently when a large amount arrives at once, so splitting also tends to be easier on digestion.
Why does calcium cause constipation for some people, and what helps?
Constipation, bloating and nausea are the most reported side effects of calcium supplements, and calcium carbonate has the strongest reputation for it. Three things usually help: switch to citrate, split the dose into two smaller servings, and drink more water with it. Some people get on better with a combined formula that also contains magnesium. If symptoms continue, stop and speak to your pharmacist or GP rather than pushing through.
Can I take calcium with iron, zinc or thyroid medication?
Calcium can reduce how well your body takes up iron and zinc, and it interferes with levothyroxine and tetracycline antibiotics. The usual approach is spacing: take calcium several hours away from those supplements or medicines, for example iron in the morning and calcium in the evening. Also check your multivitamin, antacids and any bone formula, because they often contain calcium too, and the total is what counts. If you take prescribed medication, confirm the spacing with your pharmacist.
Does calcium work differently after the menopause, and what about vitamin D and K2?
Calcium and vitamin D help to reduce the loss of bone mineral in post-menopausal women aged 50 and over, where low bone mineral density is a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures. That authorised claim applies at an intake of at least 1,200 mg calcium a day from all sources, so it is about total intake, not a single tablet.
