How nutrients support focus and concentration
Focus is not one nutrient. Your brain depends on oxygen reaching your cells, on energy being released inside them, and on signals travelling between nerve cells. Several vitamins and minerals have a recognised role in those steps. That is where a supplement can help: it fills a gap in your intake.
Only a short list of claims is authorised
In the UK and the EU, health claims for food supplements must come from an approved list. Iron, zinc and iodine contribute to normal cognitive function. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) contributes to normal mental performance. Vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C and magnesium contribute to normal psychological function. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid from fish or algae, helps maintain normal brain function at 250 mg per day. Caffeine has authorised claims for alertness and concentration from 75 mg. Anything beyond that list is marketing language, not an approved claim. If your question is mainly about remembering things, our selection for memory and concentration narrows the choice further.
Form and dose decide most of the difference
Two products with the same ingredient list can behave very differently.
- Iron: bisglycinate is iron bound to an amino acid, which is usually gentler on the stomach than iron sulphate.
- Vitamin B12: methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are forms the body can use directly.
- Omega-3: read the DHA amount per daily serving, not the total fish oil weight. Algae oil is the vegan route.
- L-theanine with caffeine: an amino acid from tea leaves, often combined with caffeine for shorter work blocks.
- Magnesium: bisglycinate is well tolerated and easier to fit into an evening routine.
If your real problem is tiredness rather than distraction, start with our daily energy support range instead.
How we choose what goes in this collection
We stock what we would recommend to our own mother. We look at three things: the form of the nutrient, the dose per daily serving, and whether a combination makes sense. We carry iron as bisglycinate and B12 as methylcobalamin because the body uses those forms well. We leave out focus blends that list twenty botanicals in amounts too small to do anything. We buy directly from the brands, so what reaches you is authentic. Every product passes our compliance team, and we test batches ourselves alongside independent labs. Read how we select our brands.
Who this collection suits
Students in exam season, people working long screen days, shift workers, and anyone whose diet is thin on certain nutrients. Low iron intake and low fish intake are the two gaps we see most, which is why omega-3 with EPA and DHA sits at the centre of this category.
Be realistic about the timeline. Nutrient-based products work by topping up your intake, so give them two to three weeks of daily use before you judge them. Caffeine and L-theanine are the exception: you notice those the same morning. And a supplement cannot replace sleep. It works best when the basics are in place, which is also when most people feel the difference clearly.
If you take prescribed medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your GP or pharmacist first. NHS guidance sets a limit of 200 mg caffeine per day during pregnancy, so check caffeine-containing formulas carefully.
Frequently asked questions
They are food supplements containing nutrients with a recognised role in brain function and mental performance. Most contain B vitamins, iron, zinc, iodine, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, or plant ingredients such as green tea extract. They do not add a new ability. They support processes that already run in your body, such as oxygen transport and energy release in your cells. They work best alongside sleep, food and daylight, not instead of them.
