European food law allows only a small set of statements here, and we stick to them. Iron, zinc and iodine each contribute to normal cognitive function. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid from fish or algae, contributes to maintaining normal brain function at 250 mg per day. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) contributes to normal mental performance. Vitamins B2, B3, B6, B12 and C, plus iron and magnesium, contribute to reducing tiredness and fatigue. Plant extracts such as ginkgo and bacopa carry no approved cognitive claim, so we describe them by their traditional use only.
Dose per serving decides whether a product does anything
Most disappointment in this category comes from underdosing, not from the wrong ingredient. A fish oil capsule with 60 mg DHA needs four or five capsules to reach the 250 mg the claim is based on. So we read the DHA figure per capsule, never the total oil weight on the front of the pack. How much iron, zinc and iodine do adults need each day?
These are the UK reference intakes for adults. They are official figures, not a personal dose.

Give it two to three weeks of consistent daily use, and judge it after six to eight weeks. Omega-3 builds up slowly in your cell membranes, so nothing happens overnight. If your intake of iron or B12 was genuinely low, you may notice less mental fatigue sooner, often within a few weeks. If your intake was already fine, the honest expectation is a steadier baseline rather than a clear before-and-after moment.
Can I take these alongside my coffee?
Yes, with two practical points. Caffeine contributes to alertness and concentration from about 75 mg, roughly one cup of coffee, so a separate caffeine product on top of several coffees adds little and can make you restless. Tea and coffee also reduce iron absorption, so take an iron supplement between meals or an hour away from your brew. L-theanine is often paired with caffeine because it takes the edge off the jittery feeling.
Are these supplements suitable for children and teenagers?
Some are, in the right dose. Omega-3 with DHA and a children's multivitamin are common choices, in child-specific products with lower amounts. Adult doses of iron, zinc or high-caffeine formulas are not suitable for children, and we do not recommend caffeine or ginkgo for under-18s. Check the age on the label first. For exam periods, regular meals and proper sleep matter more than any supplement, so look at support for better nights as well.
What if I am vegan or do not eat fish?
Then two nutrients deserve attention. DHA comes from algae oil, which delivers the same fatty acid as fish oil; check that a serving reaches 250 mg of DHA, because many algae products are lighter than they look. Iodine is the second gap, as dairy and fish are the main sources in the UK diet; seaweed products vary hugely in iodine, so a measured supplement is more predictable. Vitamin B12 in an active form completes the picture.
Does a plant extract like ginkgo or bacopa do more than a mineral?
Not in terms of what may be claimed. Minerals and B vitamins have approved claims because there is agreement on what a shortfall does. Plant extracts are used traditionally and are still being studied, so no cognitive claim is permitted for them. That does not make them pointless, but it does change how you should read the pack. Our practical rule: cover the basics of your diet first, then add an extract with a stated extract ratio, and only one at a time.
