What a softgel actually is
A softgel is a soft capsule with a sealed shell around a liquid or paste filling. The shell is usually gelatine with glycerol, sometimes fish gelatine or a plant polymer. The filling is already dissolved in oil, so your body does not have to break down a pressed powder first. The sealed shell also keeps light, oxygen and moisture away from that oil, which is why fragile fillings are put in softgels.
This form makes sense for ingredients that need fat to be taken up well. You see it most with fish oil and algae oil, with the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, and with oily ingredients such as CoQ-10, astaxanthin, lutein, evening primrose oil and MCT. EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart, at an intake of 250 mg per day. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
Where a softgel is the wrong choice
A soft capsule holds a limited volume. Gram doses of magnesium, creatine or vitamin C simply do not fit, so those stay powders or tablets. Softgels also dislike heat: above roughly 25 degrees they can soften and stick together, so a warm car or a sunny windowsill is a bad storage place. Most shells are bovine gelatine, so read the label if you eat vegetarian. Our plant-based range shows which shells are made without animal gelatine.

We look at three things: the form of the ingredient, the dose per softgel, and whether a combination makes sense. A softgel earns its place only when the filling really needs oil, for example EPA and DHA in triglyceride form, or vitamin D3 carried in olive oil. Reading a softgel label
The number on the front is often the total oil weight, not the active amount. "1000 mg fish oil" can mean 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA. With products containing vitamin D3 the label usually gives both mcg and IU, which is the same amount written two ways. Three more things worth checking:
- Shell material: bovine gelatine, fish gelatine or a plant polymer.
- Antioxidant: oils normally carry a little vitamin E (tocopherol) to stay fresh.
- Serving size: two or three softgels a day changes your cost per month.
Who this form suits
Softgels suit you if large tablets are hard to swallow, or if you take an oil and would rather not taste it. Keeping fish oil in the fridge and taking it with a meal reduces the fishy aftertaste many people mention. If you like to split a dose, open a capsule or take larger amounts, products in capsule form or powders give you more freedom. One honest point: the format changes how easy a supplement is to take, not how fast it works. With most daily nutrients, expect effects after two to three weeks of consistent use.

For water-soluble nutrients such as vitamin C or most minerals, the difference is small, and a tablet or powder does the job just as well. So a softgel is not automatically the better form. It is the better form when the filling genuinely needs fat around it.

If swallowing is the problem, drops or powder are the easier route.
Anything oil-based. Fish oil, cod liver oil, krill oil and algae oil are the biggest group, followed by evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil, MCT and odourless garlic. Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K are often given this way, as are CoQ-10 products, astaxanthin and lutein, which all dissolve in fat rather than water. Multivitamins exist as softgels too, though the number of ingredients that fit is limited.
Only when the label says so. Most shells are gelatine from beef or pork, and some fish oil products use fish gelatine. Vegan softgels exist and use plant-derived polymers such as modified starch or carrageenan instead. Two things to check: the shell material and the filling. Algae oil, for example, gives EPA and DHA without fish, but it is only fully plant-based if the shell is too.
Cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, with the lid closed properly. Above roughly 25 degrees the shells soften and can stick to each other, so avoid a car, a bathroom cabinet or a windowsill. Fish oil in particular keeps better in the fridge, which also reduces aftertaste. If softgels have fused into a clump, or smell sharp and paint-like, the oil has oxidised and it is time to replace them.
Fishy burps usually mean the oil is released in an empty stomach, or that the oil is no longer fresh. Three things help: take them with a meal that contains some fat, keep the pack in the fridge, and split a high dose over two moments in the day. Also check the freshness marker on the label, an added tocopherol, and buy a pack size you finish within a few months.
Usually just the weight of the oil in the capsule, not the amount of omega-3. A 1000 mg fish oil softgel commonly contains around 300 mg omega-3, of which perhaps 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA. Turn the pack over and read the amounts per softgel and per daily serving. Also look at the chemical form: triglyceride and ethyl ester versions can differ in uptake, and the label states which one you have.
