Natural and synthetic vitamin E: what the label really tells you
Vitamin E is a family of eight compounds
Vitamin E is not one single substance. It is a group of eight fat-soluble compounds: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Alpha-tocopherol is the form your body holds on to, and it is the form counted on a label. Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. That is the only health claim approved for it in Europe, and it is why most people take it.
Fat-soluble means it needs some fat in your meal to be absorbed well. Your body also stores what it does not use straight away, so a missed day changes very little. You will find single vitamin E products here and combined formulas across our vitamins range.
Natural and synthetic are not equally strong
Two names decide most of your choice. d-alpha-tocopherol is the natural form, made from plant oils. dl-alpha-tocopherol is made in a lab. Per milligram the natural form counts double: 1 mg of vitamin E activity equals 1 mg of d-alpha-tocopherol, or 2 mg of the synthetic version. So a 100 mg synthetic capsule is not the equal of a 100 mg natural one. UK labels still show IU (international units) as well, which is why 400 IU is the strength you see most often on the shelf.

Who vitamin E genuinely suits

A supplement is a sensible top-up if you rarely eat those foods, if you follow a very low-fat diet, or if fat absorption is reduced. Some people also take it together with vitamin C products as part of a steady daily antioxidant intake.
One honest point: vitamin E is not something you feel. Its work happens at cell level, so judge it as part of your daily nutrient intake, not by how you feel after a week. And more is not automatically better here. With a meal that contains some fat, such as breakfast with nuts or a main meal cooked in oil. Vitamin E is fat-soluble, so a fat-free snack gives you less from the same capsule. The time of day does not matter, so pick the meal you never skip. Most products are softgel capsules, which already carry the vitamin in oil, but taking them with food still helps.
No. Vitamin E oil used on the skin is a cosmetic product and does not add to your dietary intake. A capsule, softgel or liquid taken by mouth is what counts towards your daily vitamin E. Some oils are sold for both uses, so check the label: if it carries nutrition information and a serving size, it is meant to be taken. If it only lists cosmetic ingredients, keep it for external use.
Two situations deserve attention. If you take blood-thinning medication such as an anticoagulant, or you have surgery planned, check with your doctor or pharmacist first, because high doses of vitamin E can affect blood clotting. The same applies during chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The NHS states that taking 540 mg (800 IU) or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm, so there is no reason to go beyond that on your own.
They are different products, not upgrades. Standard supplements give you alpha-tocopherol only, because that is the form your body maintains in the blood and the form used for labelling. Mixed tocopherols add beta, gamma and delta, so the profile looks more like food. Tocotrienols, usually from annatto or rice bran, are dosed and sold separately and are not counted as alpha-tocopherol on a label. If you simply want to cover your vitamin E intake, plain natural alpha-tocopherol does that at the lowest cost.
