Astaxanthin is a red-orange pigment from the carotenoid group and occurs naturally in algae, salmon, shrimp, and lobster. It is especially known as the compound that gives salmon its pink color.

Zanthin® is a brand name for a high-quality form of natural astaxanthin. It is derived from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, known as the richest natural source of astaxanthin.

Natural astaxanthin is extracted from the alga Haematococcus pluvialis and is well-absorbed. Synthetic astaxanthin is widely used in fish feed (such as for salmon) but is not approved for human consumption in the Netherlands.
