Activated charcoal capsules, tablets and powder: what changes between them
What activated charcoal actually is
Activated charcoal is charcoal treated with steam or oxygen at very high heat. That treatment makes it extremely porous, so one gram carries a surface area of several hundred square metres. Gas molecules stick to that surface. This is called adsorption: substances attach to the outside of the charcoal instead of being taken up by your body. The charcoal is not digested and leaves again.
It is not a nutrient and you will not find it in any food. It is manufactured for human use, unlike barbecue charcoal, which should never be eaten. Most supplements sold here use steam-activated coconut shell, which gives a fine particle size and plenty of pores. You will find it alongside other plant-based options in our Herbs & plants range.
One approved claim, and what it means for your dose
The European food safety authority (EFSA) accepts a single health claim: activated charcoal contributes to reducing excessive flatulence after eating. The claim comes with a condition of use, 1 g at least 30 minutes before the meal and 1 g shortly after it. So the strength per capsule decides how many you swallow. At 334 mg per capsule that is three capsules per dose, six around one meal. Claims about detox, hangovers or whiter teeth are not approved, so we do not make them.
Forms and the practical trade-offs
- Capsules and tablets: no measuring, no black fingers, easy to carry to a restaurant. Check the label, because low-strength capsules mean a large capsule count.
- Powder: the lowest cost per gram and easy to reach 1 g, but you need accurate scales and it stains everything it touches.
- Split-and-pour capsules: swallow them whole or open them into water, useful if you dislike large capsules.
Timing matters more than strength. Charcoal binds indiscriminately, so it can also grab medicines, the contraceptive pill, and vitamins or minerals taken at the same moment. Leave at least two hours between them. For that reason most people use charcoal around specific meals rather than every day, and support everyday digestive comfort in other ways.
How we choose the activated charcoal we stock
We look at three things: the source, the strength, and whether the dose on the label can realistically reach the 1 g that the approved claim is based on. We prefer steam-activated coconut shell, and we prefer capsules that state milligrams per capsule clearly, so you are not left guessing how many to take. We do not stock charcoal blended into vague detox mixes, because the claim does not support it. Every product passes our compliance team first, we test ourselves, and independent labs spot-check batches. That is how we select our brands.
Who it suits, and who it does not
Activated charcoal suits people who get wind after certain meals and want something to use occasionally, at a specific moment. It works mechanically, not nutritionally, so there is nothing to build up over weeks. If your complaint is broader or persistent, a live bacteria supplement or a look at your diet is usually the more useful route. Speak to your GP or pharmacist first if you take prescribed medication.

Whichever you pick, check the milligrams per capsule so you know how many make up one gram.

Charcoal binds substances in the gut without distinguishing between them, so it can reduce how much of a medicine, the contraceptive pill, or a vitamin or mineral you actually take up. Leave at least two hours between charcoal and anything else you swallow. If you use prescribed medication, check with your GP or pharmacist before starting, since the spacing advice depends on the medicine.
Because the charcoal itself is black and passes through the gut unchanged. Dark stools are a normal and harmless side effect of taking it, and they stop when you stop. Higher doses can also make stools firmer or lead to constipation, which is one reason we suggest using charcoal around specific meals rather than in large amounts every day. Drinking enough water with each dose helps.
Activated charcoal works mechanically and nothing accumulates in your body, so there is no benefit to building it up over weeks. The approved use is tied to a meal, which makes occasional, targeted use the more logical approach. Continuous daily use also means constantly spacing out medicines and nutrients, which is impractical. If you feel you need it at every meal, that is worth discussing with your GP rather than solving with more charcoal.
Both can be genuinely activated charcoal, but they differ in pore structure. Coconut shell tends to give a high number of very small pores and a fine particle size, which is why it dominates the supplement market here. Wood-based charcoal has a coarser pore structure and is used more in filtration. We prefer steam-activated coconut shell and expect the label to state the source, because a label that only says "charcoal" tells you too little.
