What GABA is
GABA stands for gamma-aminobutyric acid. Your body makes it itself, and in the brain it works as the main "slow down" signal: it lowers the activity of nerve cells. It sits with the amino acids, even though your body does not use it to build protein. Food gives you small amounts as well, mostly fermented products such as kimchi and tempeh, plus ripe tomatoes and germinated brown rice.
What oral GABA can and cannot do
Here we would rather be straight with you. GABA in a capsule is not the same thing as GABA inside your brain. The molecule carries an electrical charge, and the blood-brain barrier, the filter between your blood and your brain tissue, lets charged molecules through poorly. Blood levels clearly rise after you swallow it. How much reaches the brain is still debated, and part of the research points to an indirect route through the gut and the vagus nerve.
In practice that means GABA is something you try, not something we can promise results from. The European food safety authority (EFSA) has approved no health claim for GABA, so you will not read one on this page. People mostly use it for a calmer half hour before a presentation or before bed, and they judge it within the first hour: some notice something, some notice nothing. Two forms, and a real price difference
You will find two forms here. Synthetic GABA is chemically made and cheaper per gram. PharmaGABA is produced by fermentation with the bacterium Lactobacillus hilgardii, and it is the form used in most published trials. The molecule is identical in both. There is no convincing head-to-head human data showing that PharmaGABA is absorbed better, so we treat the difference as production method plus research history, not as proven superiority.
