Vitakruid Fish Oil Forte 1000 (90 or 180 softgels) contains 1000 mg fish oil concentrate per softgel, including 350 mg EPA and 250 mg DHA. The fish oil is cold-extracted and in natural triglyceride form. Each softgel also contains 5 mg vitamin E as d-alpha-tocopherol. Fatty acids are the building blocks of fats. They consist of a chain of carbon atoms with hydrogen atoms attached. Fatty acids are found in almost all fats and oils, both from animal and plant sources.
Fatty acids are classified as saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acids are commonly found in butter, cheese, meat and coconut fat. Monounsaturated fatty acids are found in olive oil, avocado, and nuts, among others. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are found in oily fish, sunflower oil, flaxseed, and walnuts. Omega 3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA belong to the polyunsaturated fatty acids.
EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are omega 3 fatty acids mainly found in fish and algae. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) is a plant-based omega 3 fatty acid. This product contains EPA and DHA from fish oil.
Fats in food and fish oil naturally occur as triglycerides. A triglyceride consists of three fatty acids bound to one glycerol molecule. When concentrating fish oil, EPA and DHA are first separated from the other fatty acids. One method creates ethyl esters. The method used for this product restores the original triglyceride structure.
Fish oil itself is a fat, and EPA and DHA are fatty acids. Fats are naturally eaten together with other foods. That is why the manufacturer advises taking the softgels with the evening meal, preferably a meal containing fats such as fish, meat, eggs, dairy, or a dish prepared with oil or butter.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that naturally occurs in plant oils, nuts, seeds, avocado, and green leafy vegetables. In this product, vitamin E is added as an antioxidant to preserve the quality of the fish oil in the softgel. In addition, vitamin E extends the shelf life of the fish oil.
