Viridian Vitamin K2 50 mcg (30 or 90 capsules) contains vitamin K2 in the form of menaquinone-7 (MK-7), sourced in Italy from fermented cultures of Bacillus subtilis natto. Each capsule provides 50 mcg of vitamin K2, in a base of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), spirulina and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus). For adults, the recommended dose is 1 to 2 capsules per day with a meal. The capsules are suitable for vegans.
Vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble vitamin also known as menaquinone. You can mainly find it in dairy and fermented foods, and it is also available as a food supplement.
Vitamin K2 can be found in fermented cheese, yoghurt, sauerkraut, and natto. Natto is a Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans.
Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is mainly found in leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale. Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is mainly found in dairy and fermented products. The difference lies in their chemical structure and food sources.
Because vitamin K2 is obtained through fermentation with Bacillus subtilis natto, it is not of animal origin. This makes the product suitable for vegans. MK-7 from fermentation is a widely used form of vitamin K2 in food supplements.
Natto is a traditional Japanese dish made from fermented soybeans. It has a strong flavour and a sticky, stringy texture, and in Japan it is often eaten for breakfast with rice.
Vitamin K2 is fat-soluble. That's why the manufacturer recommends taking the capsules with a meal, preferably one that contains fat. Taking it with a fixed meal also makes it easier not to forget the supplement.
