It is derived from natto, a traditional Japanese fermented soy product. The vitamin K2 in natto is produced by fermentation with Bacillus subtilis, a bacterium known for its ability to produce vitamin K2.
Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is mainly found in green leafy vegetables. Vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7) is mainly found in fermented foods.
Vitamin K2 affects blood clotting. This can be disadvantageous when using coumarin derivatives (vitamin K antagonists), due to their opposing effects.
This product is often combined with vitamin D, but always consult an expert if in doubt.
