What is folic acid?
Folic acid is a form of vitamin B11 used in supplements and fortified foods. It is a stable, easily measurable variant of folate, a B vitamin important for the body. Folic acid is often added to supplements because it is more shelf-stable than the natural form.
What does DFE mean for folic acid?
DFE means "Dietary Folate Equivalents". This is a method used in the US to fairly compare different forms of folate and folic acid. This unit takes into account how well your body can absorb the substance. In this supplement, 785 micrograms of folic acid corresponds to 1,360 micrograms of DFE.
Where is folate naturally found?
Folate, the natural form of vitamin B11, is mainly found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, but also in citrus fruits, legumes (such as lentils and beans), avocado and whole grain products. So you get it through a varied plant-based diet.
What is the difference between folate and folic acid?
Folate is the form naturally found in food, such as vegetables and fruit. Folic acid is the synthetic variant used in supplements and fortified products. They are similar, but not exactly the same. Folic acid is more stable, making it easier to process in tablets or capsules.
