NOW Foods Optimal Digestive System (90 vegetarian capsules) contains a blend of enzymes, including protease, amylase, and lipase. In addition to this enzyme complex, 30 mg of Alpha-galactosidase has been added. This supplement is suitable for people following a vegetarian or vegan diet and can be taken with a variety of meals.
Plant enzymes are enzymes derived from plant sources, such as papaya and pineapple, that can be used during a meal.
Alpha-galactosidase is an enzyme obtained from the fungus Aspergillus niger. It helps break down certain carbohydrates, such as those found in beans and legumes.
These are international standard units that indicate how active an enzyme is, meaning how well it can perform its task. FIP is used for lipase (breakdown of fats), DU for amylase (breakdown of starch), HUT for protease (breakdown of proteins), AG for amyloglucosidase (starch to glucose), and CU for cellulase (fibers).
It is most common to take the capsules just before or during a meal. This way, the enzymes can be present at the same time as the food.
The combination of enzymes such as amylase, protease, and lipase ensures that the supplement has a wide range of applications.
